My poor girl peggy got ploughed into by my other dog and is lame on her back leg.saw vet today and x rays booked tomorrow at 10,worried this might be a torn cruciate ligament but im so worried as peggy is 12 years old,has anyone else had this with an older dog? we would definately go ahead if she needs the operation but surgery a big worry,i have shed a few tears today as I feel I should of protected her more, she just didnt see him coming she normally just gets out of the way i blame myself totally, but walking them all these years together i never thought this would happen.
Any advice, please I know nothing about this.

my girl was a fair bit younger than your lady when she had cruciate repair. she was in so much pain that we didnt have a choice as it is not something that will get better without surgery. you must be guided by your own vet and how you feel. i will say thought that the aftercare is as important as the surgery. cage rest is a must. only out for toileting initally. good luck

My 14yr old BC had surgery on her cruciate at just over 12yrs, she had extra capsular repair rather than the big re-construction surgery that can be done.
She did very well during the surgery and recovered well, she did have a lot of muscle atrophy after the 6 weeks rest period but once we were able we took her to hydrotherapy for 2 months and she's great now.
She can run, obviously not like a youngster but she's fit active and enjoys her walks.
Best of luck to you and your girl Peggy

Has a bitch of 13 and a half snap her cruciate but as she was well into extra time I decided it was best to say good bye, very sad to loose for that reason but she was too old, not for the GA but for the rest period.
So I think it depends on the age expectancy of the dog concerned, if they often live to 15 or 16 years then I would not hesitate but when the average age is less than the age the injured dog it is then time to make a very hard decision, my thoughts are with you and I hope you have a long lived breed.
Not something that I would put an old dog through. The recovery period can be very difficult.
I would cage rest and cross my fingers.

Got peg back from vets today and great joy as it is not cruciate ligament as feared,or any fractures, this is a return, sadly, of her rheumatoid arthritis,or we hope just a flare up so back on steroids which is not what I want but only for two weeks.
peg is a saluki and although grey round the muzzle now she is still an active dog so we wouldnt has hesitated if she had to have surgery,im am just overjoyed she doesn't have to go through that, vets thinks she will be able to bear weight on that leg in 4-5- days so fingers crossed here.
Thankyou for all your replies,
Ash.
Good news - certainly better than cruciate! :)

Great news, hope the steroids do the trick.
Cruciate surgery and recovery is a worry but with my dog as she was very fit and extremely active it was worth every penny and worry and 2 years on she's still buzzing.
