So.... 6 months into house with carpets - they are definitely NOT biscuit coloured any more!

I need your top tips folks - we are using a rubber brush to remove the slick of black hair on everything (who the heck says Tibetan Terriers do not shed? pft!), then vacuuming (and need to get a better vacuum, the hoover cylinder job we have is RUBBISH)...

But for the icky areas, er, where a certain Tibetan person occasionally cocks a leg - whats the best plan of attack here?

I have a steamer that will do carpets (but not for too long or the bleddy nozzle starts to MELT), a carpet cleaner but it won't generally get close enough to the edges of things which is where he widdles, and I have just ordered some Mistral Odourfresh stuff which appears to be safe for carpets.

Can I bung the odour fresh into the carpet cleaner? Should I apply it diluted in water (spray bottle?) and then scrub/blot... halp!

I use an enzymatic urine remover from petsa at home. Sorry can't remember the name but it comes in large turquoise bottles. It works well

The Pets at Home stuff is called Simple Solution - Stain & odour removal.
I use this too and it's good

You can hire carpet cleaners. We hired one a while ago from B&Q that had different attachments to do around the edges and tricky places that are hard to reach.cant remember how much it was but couldnt have been too expensive or we wouldnt have done it :-). That worked a treat on out manky old carpet.

Best results I had with carpets was with diluted Bio Washing Liquid/powder in a Vax   - or you can apply it with a sponge to hard to reach areas.     Even kept our manky old carpet fresh with a puppy in the house who thought Housetraining was for others but not her ;)

You could always send me the small Tibetan person, we have hard floors here :-D

How old is said Tibetan person?   Is he housetrained?

If he's cocking, remember to wash down the area above where the damp patch is too, that way you'll get rid of any smells acting as a cue ;)

I feel your pain, theemx--the puppy has precipitated a spate of leg cocking. Even Jack, the world's biggest mother's pet, did that right in front of me. He got a severe telling off :(

I frequently think of rehoming the Tibetan Person.. hes FOUR.. he is housetrained but scent marks indoors, hes horribly anxious, insecure, neurotic, bitey (strangers) and barky (everything) - I am still toying with de-balling him but I fear he would become more insecure (if less of an arse with the other dogs) and would also grow a horrible coat (he has a full coat)...

I might tie a knot in his willy...

I hate the idea but in the USA they use belly bands, basically a sanitary belt and pad) for persistent markers.  Had you thought to remove the carpets and go for hard floor with washable area mats.

I have tiles and rugs . We just chuck them . Don't have markers but have had 2 veterans who have had accidents .
If you are concerned about castrating your dog and want to know the effects of castration then you can speak to your vet about chemical castration, where the dog is given an anti-testosterone drug which will mimic the effect of castration, it lasts about 28 days,  is not cheap, but you can see before you take the plunge ....if you don't show him then  clip him out , then if he settles you may want to keep him , or he would be a better natured dog to re home.

I too have a persistant "marker" and the only thing that works is when i've caught him in the act and scolded him (and making a loud noise if i have something convenient in my hand )

We've done suprelorin, the results were that he was marginally  nicer to the other dogs (he 'pushes' them, standing over them and seemingly going 'ha, look at my fully functioning balls!'  and also tries to control where they go, they being my two older males, he wouldnt DARE do this with the girls!)... but quite a bit worse with people..

Thing is he is SUCH (for want of a better word and to coin OH's phrase) a nobber with people he doesn't know, rehoming him just isn't an option, particularly if neutering him would make him worse, as theres no way I'm rehoming him entire (his genes just DO NOT need passing around).

In his defence, he has got bad eye sight (well, hes partially blind and getting more so) but we've gone as far as we can with that at the vets and theres nothing to be done for it.

If the two boys he is such a PITA with were younger, I'd consider rehoming or er, more drastic options (his problems are by no means limited to scent marking!! he will lash out at the other dogs and we have had several fairly serious fights here), but these two are 12 years old and showing their age, they won't be around forever and as I say, he DARE not be an arse to the bitches, they just won't stand for it.

I think we might revisit suprelorin again as I have really given up trying to get him nice with people for now and am just avoiding him ever meeting any!

Id loooooooooove to have all hard floors btw.. I just can't afford to change these carpets yet, they were here when I moved in!
