Does anyone know of anyone (apart from fit and fertile) that will freeze dog semen please in the UK. Have not had much luck looking on the internet. Thank you.

Thank you, I will contact Innovis, Malvern would be fine, not far from where I live.

Did you need a teaser bitch, trameg? I'm travelling down that way soon ...

There was one there last night, but Thank you for the offer. You should have seen my boy's face as the breed was way bigger than him and you could see him thinking - how do I get up there! :-)

Could someone please tell me about the process in which this is done... I'm grimacing as I ask but think I need to know LOL. I am wondering if you could avoid the supposed changes in temperament that can occur from letting your dog be used as a stud dog by freezing instead.

My males have mated and they are no different now to what they were before, they react if one of my bitches are in season but don't bother when we are out going looking for other bitches.

Collecting, freezing and storing semen is very expensive and the results are lower than fresh or chilled semen, the only reason I would do it would be if I had a top notch male and wanted to save semen for future generations.

Any bitches produced by AI must be mated naturally.

Well i've been told by my mentor that bascially they need a bitch in season (known as a teaser) and you let to dog get ready & go for it then the semen person "takes over" before the dog actually gets going inside the bitch.........and well you can figure out the rest!

My mentor also said you really should let a dog have a proper stud before having any collection, her old champion boy did not like anybody helping him when he was doing the deed, if anybody tried to interfere he'd jump straight off! So getting semen from him was never going to happen, where as her younger dog is a sex maniac and doesn't even noticed when the semen man takes over lol and so far his son (my boy) is exactly the same as his dad with bitch (even down to facial expressions) so hopefully he'll be the same with mr semen! lol

We recently visited Angelika in Cambridge.  I must admit before we went I thought we'd just hand Stan over and then get him back when the deed was done, how wrong was I!!

She used one of her own bitches, not in season, to get my boy interested, with my daughter sat holding her head, I held Stan at the head end and gave him lots of praise and encouragement while she got on with the business end!! It was all over and done with in a matter of minutes.

I'll never forget my vet saying to me that breeders in the UK are a lot more squeamish handling their stud dogs whilst in the USA its a regular thing for them to "help them out"!! I suppose it's because we don't have a culture of AI.

You also can't use any semen collected until the dog is dead. Unless it is an Irish Wolfhound. They have different rules apparently. ;-)

I've taken 2 different dogs along, and have helped with collection from a couple of other males, and you can't be squeamish. We have a good laugh at the whole situation.

The semen is collected (hopefully with a very helpful bitch on hand, but not always necessary) and the collected semen is looked at under a microscope to make sure that the semen is viable, and that there is enough for storage. If everything is ok it is then frozen and you will pay a holding fee each year until you use it, which could be many years down the line.
