Topic Dog Boards / Health / giving coconut oil to senior dogs?
- By saga Date 13.06.12 16:53 UTC
Hi I have a 11 year old GSP. She is ok, but is fast becoming a senior dog with ailments that come with old age. Was wondering whether any of you give your dog coconut oil. Apparently it is a good brain supplement as well as helping supple up their joints. I would also be interested to know where your coconut oil was purchased.

I do, and I get it from holland and barratts on the high street. I imagine you can get cheaper on-line but a 16oz tub from there cost £15

I get ours from coconoil. It's good as handcream for humans too! I usually get a pack of three at a time.

Thanks for your input. Have you seen a improvement in your dog's condition through giving him / her the coconut oil?

It's hard to be sure. Our oldie is in good condition for his age, but he's raw fed with additional veggies like all our dogs. He is a bit exercise intolerant these days but still goes out for a little walk each day. He's kept warm and dry, or cool on a hot day. There's someone in all day and he has canine companions too. It's hard to say if any of these things makes a huge difference on its own - it's more about using a range of strategies together.

if its pure coconut oil, yes, goes solid and white when cold. Very good for all of us and has many uses

Not sure exactly so I looked it up here as our dogs are either much bigger or much smaller than yours. I guess for an 18 kilo dog it might be about a couple of teaspoons.

Actually that article suggests using coconut oil for things I wouldn't have thought of so I'm going to try it on one of the others dry skin patches.

Its brilliant on dry skin, that's what I originally got it for. Then I noticed the dogs were very keen to steal the pot and lick it out! So I started putting a dollop in with their meal now and then.
