My bitch is on day 60,and she didn't eat her breakfast, temperature has been 37.1-37.2 all day,she has been in her whelping box nearly all day apart from going to the toilet, she is panting with a bit of restlessness and digging, and I've just noticed a green discharge from her,is this normal to be green?.I have my breeder and vet's numbers ready, and no matter how many books and internet I've read,I'm still now nervous!

Green discharge before the first puppy is born is a danger signal

The green discharge is from the sites where the placentas are attached and shows that placentas have detached.  If a puppy is not born quickly after this then it will die from oxygen starvation.

I recently had 3 stillborn puppies plus another dead one two days later.

Hope your bitch is ok...I agree with brainless, green discharge is NOT normal.

> green discharge is NOT normal

To clarify it is normal once puppies have been born.

Hopefully she has whelped or you have taken her to the vet as this is a major danger sign.

I'm hoping that the OP is going to get back to us, as I too was concerned about a green discharge prior to whelping.

Thank you for your advice! My girl had 2 boys and 3 girls, she also had 2 stillborns,1 which hadn't formed properly, but the 5 alive are healthy and active,so thank you,we all, could have been alot worse off! Can't believe some people come on her for advice then get snotty because they got it!!

Spoke too soon, she's just had another boy!!

Pleased to hear she has whelped safely, Congrats on the new arrivals.

How soon after the discharge did she have her first pup? Where in the order did the stillborns come?

Hi, have been watching this post with interest, but didnt participate as no experience of this. So So pleased that your girl is well and that you have some lovely pups. Like Rhodach, if you dont mind and have the time, I would really like to know a little more about what happened after your first post. Did you take your girl to the vet or did she start to whelp at home??  Any information would be usueful for other breeders who have not had experience of this happening, I am sure. Only if you feel up to it.

I noticed the discharge during the afternoon when she went to the toilet, only a little greenish, but later that day it was blackish green,by the time our breeder and vet checked her,she was in labour,so we left it to nature at home, she produced her 1st pup just before midnight, the 2nd pup must have been the problem,it was stillborn and not formed properly, couldn't even tell what sex it was.Next was a healthy pup, then the next one was also dead, the final 2 were healthy, then 5hrs later when we were sure she had finished, she had another pup,so that's 3 girls,3 boys, and who knows?Mother is from litter of 9,Father from litter of 11,bt I'm happy with what I have, she scanned 6 but my scanner isn't always right.
Please, keep checking your bitches when they toilet, and seek help, don't leave it,and everyone who's a novice like me,please listen to the experts!!
Anyway bitch and pups are settling,I'm off for a nap, thank you people once again.

First off, so pleased that your bitch is fine, and pups delivered.  I would say, given the circumstances, that I would probably be asking the vet for a scan, just to be sure that nothing has been retained.  :-)

I'd agree, nearly 3 weeks ago my bitches labour was not progressing well after first puppy, but I had to see out of hours vet who would not consider Oxytocin to speed things along for 4 hours after the first puppy.

Anyway long story short 4 hours after first pup numbers two and three arrived almost together in the car as we arrived at the vets, shortly followed by number 4 at home.

Things went along apace after this but sadly numbers 5, 7 and 8 were stillborn (and sods law all perfectly formed girls, which is what we wanted).

No.10 appeared dead but we got him going.  Then 2 1/2 days later she passed another large decomposing puppy.  She needed a trip to teh vets on a Sunday for Antibiotics, but thankfully no other issues.

Luckily we have 4 boys and three girls thriving, and Mum will be spayed as soon as her milk dries up.

Barbara, you must be gutted.  I know yours is an entirely different breed, but with mine I get insistant about oxytocin and refuse to wait 4 hours.

So sorry about the girls you lost, but glad that survivors are thriving.

My own vet wouldn't have been an issue but he was on call, and had to use cover.
