My CED was asking to be let out over the weekend from his kennel for a wee at about 1.30 am.From the darkness something was glowing very brightly, the length being around 60cm.At first I thought it was a toy,but when I bent down and poked it out from his sleeping section I found it was one of his bones. It was a large section of pork rib, given to him that morning.Well it was glowing very brightly and had to be seen to be belived.I am guessing bacteria as the pigs in Cornwall tend not to be radio active.I will ask my butcher on Thursday (bones and fresh meat day).A friend at work did say years ago that chickens were injected with phosphorus(long banned I guess) but this did puzzle me,so much so that I had to wake my other half.Very strange indeed.

Now that is just weird!!!!

I guess there's one benefit - much less likely to step on a misplaced dog bone in bare feet at night - Ouch!

also if digested, the result could stop a squelchy accident if steped on,but I have never seen anything like it.

Very handy for those dark winter nights when you can't see where they've 'been'...
... I hope you can get an answer, it's almost creepy! I wonder if its something the Fortean Times would be interested in? It sounds almost like the phosphorescence you get in the sea (an amazing thing to experience), but that's due to certain weather conditions and plankton.... Are you by the coast?

Keep meaning to get up in the early hours to check, but as the woos need a wee at 6ish I usually roll over and go back to sleep.

It was probably hot enough to make the phosphorus in the bone to react making it phosphorescent.

Think I found the answer, nothing sinister but as I thought a type of bacteria.
meat that glows in the dark or in the refrigerator may indicate the presence of the light-producing bacteria Pseudomonas phosphorescens. This particular bacteria is common in meat products and is harmless to humans, according the Western Australia Department of Health. According to the book "Meat Hygiene", the glow fades as the meat begins to deteriorate, which is when it becomes unsafe to eat. Until that happens, you can simply trim the surface of the meat and prepare it as usual.

> Pseudomonas phosphorescens

Do we have that bacteria here? We're a long way from Western Australia and don't have quite the same climate.

apparently so,my daughter googled it,but as i was tired(probabaly from late night bone spotting)that was the first one I found. The reference my daughter found was refering to pork.

I have seen a green shimmer on meat before now,but this was glowing brightly,so much so that i could see my dogs face clearly.

Wow, that would spook me too! I've always been dubious about the green shimmer and cut off that bit of meat before cooking it, just to be on the safe side.

I've seen it quite frequently on bacon at Tesco's recently!  A real green shimmer, let's just say I haven't picked it up.

Nothing to do with glowing bones, but when I got into the car yesterday there was a small luminous green ball on the steering wheel. On closer inspection it was a spider! I swiftly removed it....
