Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dog with grass allergy - Antihistamines?
- By akh0706 [gb] Date 29.05.12 16:57 UTC
Hi
Molly my EBT has a eye allergy to the grasses etc in our local fields. I gave a her a Tesco own brand tablet last night which has really helped already. But I read today that dogs are only allowed the 'drowsy' tablets, I gave her 'non drowsy',
Can any inform me either way please?
Thanks, Anne

Piriton is  chlorphenamine maleate  the dose is:

4 - 8 mg large dog x 2 a day, 2 - 4 mg x 2 a day small ones

Piriteze is ceterizine and it is not as well researched as chlorphenamine maleate.

Cetirizine has been trialled on dogs for allergic skin disease at 1mg/kg with minimal side effects

HTH

PS there are a lot of different antihistamines, CM is well researched, look for one that contains this.

Thanks Tohme, I'll take a look tomorrow. The tablet Molly had last night active ingredient is Loraradine which is 10mg, I checked that the dose is ok for a dog 50lb upwards. Shall I give her another tonight do you think?
Thanks

I would not continue giving any OTC drugs to my dog without consulting my vet, an antihistamine in an emergency is one thing, but it is not a substitute for professional advice when you can access it.

I agree with the advice from tohme - do check with your vet.  I would only give Piriton.  However, once he/she gives you the all-clear to order have a look at Hyperdrug.  I buy 500 x 4mg of Piriton for my allergic dog and Hyperdrug has been the cheapest for the last two years.  Their service is pretty quick too :)

Piriton was the antihistamine that a vet recommended for my last westie. It is important to see the vet to get the dosage correct. Then buy them when they are 3 for the price of 2 from a well known High Street chemist!
You have to ask at the pharmacy counter for Piriton, you can't just pick it up on the supermarket shelves.

Would the advice about 'drowsy only' be because caffine is often used to create the 'non-drowsy' and I always thought caffine was bad for dogs?
