Topic Dog Boards / General / Pepsi and the squirrel

Pepsi has waged a 10 year long battle to keep the squirrels out of the garden, chasing them out with a passion....this morning I was watching her , she has taken to laying in front of the big gates in the shade and Mr squirrel came down from the tree and was digging his nuts up from the lawn...he wandered across the drive not 10 foot in front of her and she did not react, she just watched him.
My Granny Pepsi is getting so old, she is having good and bad days and unfortunatly the bad are becoming more. I could have cried to watch her. Never would I have imagined a day when she would not have made an effort to chase him off.
It has made me so sad.

Perhaps she's a. lulling the squirrel into a false sense of security to finally catch him when he becomes complacent or b. she's simply wiser and knows that a bernese is highly unlikely to ever catch a squirrel :-)

It maybe just too hot for her as my two are lolloping round like wet lettuce leaves at the moment !

I wish I could put it down to the heat or her getting wiser but she is not so good. I know that and we have been taking extra care of her. At 10 1/4 she is old for a Bern but as long as the good days outnumber the bad we will nurse her along. It was just a moment in time that makes it hit home just how wonky she is becomming. Bless her she is such a darling.

wouldnt mind i had only gone out with him for a quick walk he didnt even run around at all,
scared me half to death i tell ya,,

he's ok now but really does not like this heat at all poor lad,

I understand what you mean, Aileen. Let's hope she was just feeling too hot to bother.

aw Merlot,I do understand,it s so sad to see our dogs age.To see my old collie,Flyss, wracked with arthritis, when once she used to fly like the wind, breaks your heart, doesnt it.But youve still got her to love, and dogs accept such things-she wont be thinking"I used to be able to chase them!"and getting upset, thats our  job!

Believe me Chaumsong, one of my Bernese caught a squirrel. She was so amazed that she dropped it and it ran up the tree!

Yes Pepsi has caught squirrels, and her Daughter at 8 still can up in the woods. I am sure we still have some time with Granny, but it was a sad moment to realize she just cannot be bothered any more.

I'm hoping too it's the heat that causing her to not react to these mad nut loving creatures who climb trees...
Bernese can be very quick and agile when they want to be eh?! Even Kai has given up chasing rabbits in this weather, lol never thought id see the day ;-)

Give Pepsi Woo and great big hug from Auntie Sue x
