Topic Dog Boards / Health / Arthritis & hot weather

Does anyone have experience of a dog with severe arthritis, & hot weather exacerbating the condition. He loves lying in the sun but the heat this year is aggravating the arthritic joints, has monthly injections of cartrophen, has daily chondroitin, MSM & Glucosamine & can't think of anything else but rimadyl. Any ideas or advice welcome, thank you.

Buster has arthritic elbows but fortunately they do not need pain meds yet. This hot weather doesn't seem to make them worse as such, but it seems to sap his energy which makes his movements look like they take more effort (if that makes any sense?).

you could try a bioflow collar? My old dog had courses of cartrophen.fish oils, flexi joints and her magnetic collar, also trocoxil, which is a once monthly dose.My vet used to say if everything she has, helps a little bit, hopefully she ll feel more comfortable. Its a cruel thing, arthritis, give your dog a hug from me.

Yes have considered Bio flow collars but the dogs don't wear collars unless out as they constrict their dewlaps especially this weather, & Otto never quite grew into his!
If this autumn (cooler weather) he doesn't perk up again, it's something to consider.

My knee has advanced arthritis due to extensive trauma from horse riding accident. I can certainly say very hot humid weather makes its much worse so I can sympathise with your dog.

You might want to add turmeric to the mix of supplements. I have found this to be an excellent painkiller and anti-inflammatory herb for my dogs. :-)

You'll laugh at this - my knee arthritis is much better after I've been eating lots of the cheap pineapple that are in now.     The active ingredient, I believe is bromelain, which you can get in tablet form as well>

In humans a hot arthritic joint needs cold, wrap a bag of frozen peas in a towel and apply to the inflammed joint.if the joint doesnt feel hot apply a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, gels should never be used on inflammed joints as it makes them very hot indeed which resuls in more pain

Thank you all for the replies, it is the hot humid days which cause him problems.  So just let him take the days at is own pace around the house & garden, with short walks in the cooler evenings around the field opposite. I'm aware that heat causes slight swelling to joints that aggravate his condition. A very stoic dog, with a very unique set of legs & problems since a pup.
