Topic Dog Boards / General / is this a recognised colour for yorkies

I met a yorkie yesterday. but it seemed to be a different colour from the normal ones. SHe looked like a dilute colour. her feet etc were a lovely peach colour and her body was  a mixture of almost white, through silver to dark grey. She was very attractive. I asked her owner but she said she was just a normal yorkie. The pup had been black when they bought her and had lightened as she grew. Is there such a thing as a dilute yorkie?

No, that's usual, especially if the yorkie's been clipped - the hair goes much paler and they end up silver and fawn instead of the slate-grey and tan they're meant to be.

Just like this very sad and embarrassed yorkie!

Aw, she shouldn't look so sad, that's a nice pet trim she's got. Of course the show trim is gorgeous, but after dematting several pets who hadn't been brushed properly, I think a terrier clip suits them quite well! I've had several unusual coloured Yorkies for grooming through, I had one that was pure silver, not just paler silver/grey you get when clipped, but a real silver. I also had one that was black & tan like the puppies are, but he was an adult. And I had one that was tan / gold all over - very striking!

Spaying can affect the coat colour and texture too making them look like a non recognisable colur.

I looked at several pictures to see if I could see one similar but that is not the colour of this dog. She was definitely a dilute colour, her pigmentation was different. I have never seen one like it and I have known lots of yorkies over the years.

shw was only 9 months old and not spayed so that wasn't the reason

Oh yes, some of those look quite similar to the golden one I used to groom. :-)

LOL at the Yorkie pic.
I'm not usually a Yorkie fan, but she looks adorable.

I think the majority of Yorkies I have met barely resemble the breed standard in either size or coat colour/lenghth - some have been bigger than my Mini Schnauzers and quite a few would probably win prizes if shown as Australian or even Norfolk Terriers. I have seen them in all shades from silvery grey to black with tiny amounts of tan.

People talk about the various types of GSD, working and show strains of gundogs, etc. but Yorkies must have an even bigger division between the show and pet types!
