Hi All,

Has anyone exported a pup to Southern Ireland? As far as i can see you can travel across without a pet passport .....just wanted to double check!

Living in Ireland and travel to the UK with my dogs... you DO need a pet passport as far as I'm aware but the rules re rabies etc won't be enforced between the two countries.

I travel to Southern Ireland from England every couple of months and i do not have pet passport for my dogs .

I also have friends who live in southern Ireland and again come to the uk 3/4 times a year with dogs and do not have per passports

I've been to and fro Southern Ireland without passports for my dogs

I'm not sure what breed it is, bucksmum, but they have a "Dangerous Dogs" list and breeds on the list are supposed to be muzzled when out in public ....

The new rules (2012) say a pets passport is needed but DEFRA also say they will not be checked.

I have travelled from the UK to Southern Ireland also ( a few times ) and not had to provide any Passports, and that's with and Affix and breed in HUGH lettering on my vehicle.

I know that the rules say a passport is required but in my experience and from other people I don't think they are actually enforcing it and to my knowledge I have not heard about any one being refused YET :)

It seems they are saying that nothing will change for now, but if there was ever a rabies alert in either country OR a clampdown, then people have been warned and can't complain if they have no passport backup. Fair enough.

Pet passports are free (at least here in Ireland) and don't take long to issue. I travel with one just in case but have never been asked for it.

They're not free here. They're not as expensive now you don't have to have the blood test but they're still over £100 all in.

I can't understand how you manage to get one free when you'll have needed to pay for the rabies vaccine at least. (I'm assuming that your dog was already microchipped so you didn't have to pay for that as well.)

They're not rabies vaccinated and were microchipped previously. It's the same case for all Ireland, not just my vet and I. Presumably, you would have to pay your vet separately for the rabies vax but as it stands, you just fill out a form from the Dept of Agriculture, have your vet sign it, send it off and your passport comes in the post.

Then they can't travel abroad so it's not a full passport - it's a vaccination certificate! You try taking your dog to France and then bringing him back, and see if it's a passport!

Maybe that's all you need when travelling between member states on the Continent? Do dogs in France need a passport to go to Germany? People don't - they use their national ID cards.

As far as I am aware all dogs in Europe have to have passport to demonstrate rabies vaccinations etc
Certainly these are required and checked at dog shows.

I have had a passport issued for a pup we sent to Canada, but no rabies was vaccination required due to his age. It was however a requirement for travel. Suspect this is the same with travel to and from Southern Ireland but haven't yet seen a definitive answer re requirement for a passport OR passport plus rabies vaccination.

They do require a rabies vaccination though.

ditto klb, have also had a passport issued for unvaccinated (Rabies) puppy, I guessed it was something like that, with free movement having always been in place for animals between UK and Ireland the Rabies vaccs is optional if your not travelling elsewhere.

I have no intention of ever taking my dogs anywhere further than the UK. It's certainly not a vaccination certificate, as it doesn't even get into whether or not they are vax'd! They can travel abroad to the UK with it, but seeing as we've never been asked for it when going back and forth I would fairly safely say it's not required though it only takes one official to make life difficult if they want to.

I've just got passports for 2 of mine, £140 for the two of them as you need to pay for the rabies vaccination and the vets time to fill the passports out. They were microchipped already but if they weren't then that would have to be paid for too.

You don't need to pay for the vet's time here for the pet passport scheme. You just print out your form, they fill it in. Obviously, if you need rabies vax, you'll need to pay for that but in this topic's question - travel from UK to Ireland - you won't :) If they cost in the UK, I wouldn't even bother getting one as they don't check them. With passports being free here it was no hassle for us to simply get them as a precautionary measure when travelling over for Crufts.

I was charged over £50 to fill in the Pet Passport for my most recent oen in 2010.  All told with the Rabies and tire testing it was over £200, and she was already chipped and tattoed.

So future ones are likely to cost over £100 for completion and Rabies and £150 with chipping.

Here they won't issue a passport with the rabies vax being given.

If so, that isn't correct, I have had passports issued without rabies vaccination for pups being exported who did not need rabies. I had microchip already as docked, identity check, passport issued, routine puppy vaccinations recorded in passport and fitness to travel completed prior to flights.

Can't recall cost but certainly not free in UK even without rabies.

50£ to fill a passport? That's expensive.

I get one for every puppy when they have their first vaccinations, and they cost 10EUR each.

I just got 2 last week £70 each so may be worth shopping around when you need another one done.
