Hi Everyone

I really need some advice, Millie is day 63 today and isnt showing any signs of whelping so we took her to the vets this morning, the vet scanned and said he could only see one pup, Im worried about her self whelping a singleton and was wondering how reliable a scan would be at 63 day, she was quite stressed and excited so was moving panting a bit, any advice and experiences would be greatly appreciated,

Many thanks
Emma

Scans at this stage should be pretty reliable. The bones will have begun to calcify so be easy to see rib cage etc. Although with a singleton it may not be enough to cause the stress hormone that causes labour. Did she just have the one mating? You dont wan to risk losing the pup but then if she does go into labour a large singleton may be unable to be passed naturally. Don't listen the the same old script give her another 24 hours that the vets are famous for saying. if you suspect there is something.wrong insist on her being examined. You know her better than anyone so trust your gut

An Xray would have been more accurate at this stage and be able to measure pups head with bitch pelvis.

The pup size is not the only problem, primary inertia is another as the one pup does not trigger enough hormones to start labour or maintain regular contractions which push the pup towards the exit.

Hope all goes well
