ok my boy had developed 2 bald patches on his bum either side, when checking closley he has visitors!!!!

All 4 dogs that sleep together in my hallway are scratching so all been dosed with frontline.  They are all still scratching and i can still see fleas on my boy.....vile things!

I have always used frontline if i suspect any probs and have never seen fleas before so am quite shocked at how bad the fleas seem to be.

what else can i use along with the frontline they have already had as clearly it isnt enough. i have hoovered everywhere and taken up my hallway carpet.

I was reading about capstar which is a pill and it says it can be used with spot on treatments. what does everyone else use, im looking for something tablet form as getting the spot on on them all is a nightmare as loads seems to end up on the fur even tho i take my time and wait until it seems to have seeped into the skin.

any ideas greatly recieved i hate the thought of them making the dogs itchy and uncomfortable.....gross little blighters :(

What about frontline spray its prescribed only. Not had much experience of fleas, its ticks I have problems.with. used effipro.

I haven't seen fleas many times over the past 7 years or so, but the few times I did, I found they are now resistant to Frontline. I have even stood and sprayed Frontline directly onto a flea and watched it live. Last year I took in some rescued cats that were full of fleas and it took both an application of Frontline AND two baths with flea shampoo AND daily catching of the fleas with a fleacomb before we were free of them, 6 days work in all!

Get down to your local Boots the Chemist tomorrow and buy some Acclaim.
It's around £13.50 but the can will treat most normal sized houses, and then some. It also kills house dust mites, which is useful if you have anyone with allergies.

Treatment lasts 6 months - 1 yr and it prevents fleas from breeding in your home. They don't breed on your dog, or cat -  they jump off and have fun in your carpets and upholstery before going back to your animals (and in a serious infestation, biting people as well, have been there worn the T-shirt when I was a kid, which is why I am so on the ball about treating the home).

If you have done that then all else is a walk in the park - over the years having lived in rental properties Acclaim has been my best friend: I sprayed before I went in, and before I left, and at intervals in-between.

I have even given half-used cans to friends and neighbours who thought that treating the cats/dogs was enough, only to find themselves bitten.

Thanks, i have heard a few people saying frontline isnt working as well anymore....think thats the last time i use that, just bought £70 worth too...Grrrrrrr

Have just ordered Acclaim online for £10 so will be blasting the house with that and hope that helps get things sorted, hate seeing them irritated by them

We use Comfortis tablets on our dogs and it's really good, not sure if it's available in England though. I buy them online as its cheaper than through the vet.

I had a letter from my vet telling me about a new flea treatment, that was a tablet, and I think called comfort, maybe thesame thing?

I found frontline didnt work on mine last year so switched to Advantix, i think its prescription only but it worked a treat. I had an infestation last year whilst I was away, when I got home my boy had nearly eaten his back end away with scratching, no fur and bright pink skin. It was horrible, I treated him that day and bathed in aloevera shampoo, used calomine on him for a few days and new growth within a week. I know some people dont like advantix, but ticks are bad where i live and it is the only thing I have found to keep them at bay.  Also I used to use Ivermectin on my pigs, but not sure if thats licensed for dogs.

I get the advantix too.  I love it.  We had a bad infestation a couple of years ago and I spent a fortune on Frontline before I reaslised that it wasn't working.  One dose of Advantix on the dog and that treats the home too so no need to worry you miss somewhere.  Not had a bother since!

Have you used a household spray with insect growth regulator like Acclaim, RIP etc?

If not the problem is likely to be that the 90% of the problem that is off the dog means that the dogs are simply being re-infested from the environment, and it does take 24 hours or so for the fleas to die once they are in contact with the Frontline on the dog, but it does nothing to stop the reproductive cycle going on in the house etc.

I've used Effipro with success. I have to de flea my cats regularly because they spend all their time hunting way in the fields. I have also found that Frontline does not work anymore and won't buy it again.

First of all we need to identify its symptoms for treating flea infestation in dogs. It can pose a serious threat to your pet's health. Advocate for dogs are other ways to ward off fleas and ticks.

Im sure I read somewhere that effipro had the same ingredients as frontline,as I was buying it because it was quite a bit cheaper, could quite well be wrong, though,I went back to using advantage in the end.

Cant use this,as I have collies.(advocate)

I have been giving my lot a daily Garlic Oil 2mg capsule for the past 8 yrs after the vet told my Mum that the fleas stop reacting to various spot on treatments, her dachsie came home with fleas after her spay which she then passed on to my pup who stayed at Mum's when I was on nights.

I read about this natural remedy from a show/breeders website who had my breed and her dogs had traveled all over the country and not a flea in sight.

Capstar only kills the adult fleas I believe, it doesn't treat any other life cycle of the flea.

Comfortis is a little 'new' for my liking, and as with most other treatments, I've read some pretty horrific stuff about side effects.  It too contains ivermectin; which I think is the ingredient that can cause problems in collie breeds.

Even here in Aus where flea infestations are much more common (due to heat / humidity), I've continued to use Frontline Plus every so often (not following the recommended dosage either!), and (touch wood) never had a problem with fleas in the 3 years I've been here.

I bought the garlic tablets from Dorwest but mine don't like them, even if I hide them in cheese they suck it off and spit the tablets out! Weird as they love liver & garlic cake!

Fleas are increasingly resistant now to frontline and I haven't used it for some time, it doesn't work. Good vets will tell you this but they do get a large cut from sales so many sell it anyway though when asked may admit to some resistance. I currently use advantix in summer and advantage in winter.
