Thinking ahead to when little Polly puss is gone ( 18 years and counting ) I've been considering a pedigree cat and love the look of Selkirk Rex's, and what I can find about their temperament, makes them look like an ideal option for us.
What I'm not sure about is their health in the UK, I saw on Wiki that they can be prone to  Polycystic Kidney Disease and   Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, how common are these conditions and are they tested for ?.

Any other information would also be greatly appreciated :-)

PM ChristineW. :) No need to worry about PKD, Selkirks cannot be registered unless the parents have been tested negative -I just wish it was the same with Persians. But in this day and age with DNA tests, this is one disease extremely easy to eradicate within one single generation. Not heard of HCM in them, it happens occasionally (not all that common) in Persians, presumably that's where it will have come from (Selkirks can be outcrossed to British, Persians and Exotics). There is as yet no DNA test for HCM in Persians and related breeds, only for Maine Coons and Ragdolls and similar.
