Hi all,
I'm beginning to think I should have called my puppy DYSON as lately all he seems to do is walk along with his nose to the ground and trying to eat anything that looks remotely interesting . He does this mainly in the house or on the patio . He seems ok when on his walks as everything is so interesting !!:)
He doesnt seem to be doing it out of greed or anything like that - I would say more curiosity ??!
I make sure that my boys try not to leave any little toys etc on the floor that he could "hoover up" .
Would you say this is just a stage and that he will grow out of it ?
Obviously I dont want him to grow up with this habit .
He's 13 weeks old by the way and has only started to do it in the last 2 weeks or so .

It is in the nature of the beast,you get the odd dog that isn't into food, but most are biological waste disposal units! The gundog and hunting breeds seem to be the greeediest, probably as some of the working drive is based on their the need to satisfy their stomachs!

This can be a nuisance on walks, in the show ting, and very embarrasing when you visti a freind/relative and find them hoovering the floors and licking the cooker.kitchen untis!!! :D

On lead you can train th4 pup to look up, and that you will not aLLOW THIS!

The rest of the time all you can do is hope he can't get to anything unsafe.

I have had upset tummies many a time with mine when they have picked up somethiung edible in the park. People have a nasty habit of leaving their left overs in the recreation grounds/parks around here. I get sick of seeing a Pitta bread chicken bones being quickly scoffed.

I did try muzzling the greediest one, but the modern plastic clasps were a dodle for her to break by pawing at it, and it got lost. Also people assume a muzzled dog to be vicious.

Thats the thing - he doesnt seem to do it out of greed .
He's more nosey than anything - maybe its worth mentioning at puppy class then ?
Just doesnt look very nice does it ?
Who said puppies werent hard work ? :)

Its just normal puppy/dog behaviour..he is investigating everything at this age. out of interest, what breed is he?

I know that this behaviour is built into berners but still unpleasent!

Vickie Rabbit droppings.!! :p and there I was looking forward to getting him out into the fields.. I can see I'm going to have to let go so to speak and hope that what goes in one end comes out the other without any harm being done inbetween..Oscar is always eating those little sort of wormcasts from the garden..daisy's etc. I read that you can teach them to track.. well thats a thought for the future.. put this hoovering to some use eh!!??

Hi - my staffie is just the same, theres not a moment goes by without someone saying 'Tess, NOW what are you eating, ' She tends not to swallow things, just chew them.

Yes, Gus is the same . He sort of walks along with nose to the ground and if there is anything in his path he has to have a little munch .
If its just a puppy thing I dont mind - just dont want him to turn into a canine hoover!! :)

Today Gus has tried to eat the doormat , had a fight with a dustpan brush , attacked the cat litter tray causing cat litter fallout on a massive scale AND chewed my bestest most favourite pair of high heels !!!
And you know what ?
I wouldnt change him for the world :) :) :)

Hi - My 5 mth old Staffie 'Charlie' not only imitates the Hoover, he also attacks the real thing even when I first got him at 7wks he had no fear of it. I remember getting it out and saying to him "this will soon wipe that big Staffie grin (Staffie owners know the one I mean) of your face". My 3 cats took one look at 'big noise machine' and promptly disappeared and Tessa my other 11yrs old Staffie who as a puppy was scared stiff of it she jumped on my/her couch. Anyway Charlie wiped the smile of my face by barking at, not scared of it one bit. Gus sounds a real character but I know what you mean about not changing him. All the best. Deirdre
