Hi All ... would like your opinion ... i had taken a deposit on a pup which has later found to have a retained testie ... i called the prospective owner and told him offering him his deposit back .. or if he wanted ... to research the problem and speak to his own vet for advice ... he came back to me a day later confirming that he wanted to go ahead with the sale ... i have reduced the price of the puppy accordingly in case the testie doesn't drop and he will need an operation in the future ... my question is ..would you alter your puppy sales contract to accommadate this or ask him to sign to the effect that he has bought the puppy with the knowledge that the puppy has this condition ..... this is the first puppy i have bred without both testies being in place so am a bit of a loss what i should be doing ... any advice would be gratefully received .
Perhaps it would be best and to also advise that the sales price has been reduced to take into account/reflect
the health issue which contributes towards the cost of neutering as most vets will go for neutering option.
Once they have been removed there should be no additional costs to the purchaser. Nor any further health issues
to the dog.

Make sure that the new owner signs to say that he is aware that the pup currently only has one testicle descended and that he is happy to accept it with that condition.

Is the puppy 8 weeks old?
Most people who I know will get the fact puppy only has one testicle noted down in contract and that there will be refund of x amount if the testicle does not appear by X age...
I suppose it depends on how common the issue is in the breed/lines e.g. how likely it is to appear within few weeks?
I think there might be differences in breeds on how it is dealt with as in some breeds if they are not there by 8 weeks, it is likely not to appear where as in some breeds quite likely to appear.

And I don't mean to be picky, but the contract will be more professional if you put either testis or testicle, not testie. :-)
Certainly put it in contract , although I didn't have it in my contract with recent pup I bought .However it was a breed known to be slow , and although not entire at 12wks (up and down and presence felt) it certainly was at 6 mths and 1 day ...timed that right ...!

When we had sold a bitch puppy with a hernia, we put that fact that the puppy was sold with a hernia in the contract - also that if it were necessary for the hernia to be operated on before the pup was old enough to spay, that we would pay.
As it happened, it had almost disappeared by the time she was speyed at 18 months!

Occasionally regular posters renew my faith in people.
On choosing our pup we naively believed he had testis, on the day of collection we were both so over the moon didn't think to check & as nothing was said by the breeder/judge who we had no reason (at the time) to believe would keep things from us. No one picked it up for months, even numerous vets who were seeing him for other problems.
When it became apparent that he hadn't, I was told that she had never had the problem before & to wait (we did) but she couldn't see a problem as he was only a pet & we weren't wanting to breed from him.

In all fairness testicles in a young dog can be there and then go back up so it could well be he did have the testicles when he was collected
especially if nobody picked up on it.
Saying this I had a vet checking and telling me there is only one when there were two(he was exported the next day so slight panic moment) and then tell my bitch puppy did not have any (which I was very happy about :) ) so my faith in vets spotting such things lessened a little :-).
and then tell my bitch puppy did not have any (which I was very happy about :-) ) so my faith in vets spotting such things lessened a little :-). Same thing happened to me -litter of 3 bitches, vet said "I'm afraid none have their testicles yet"!!
Thank you everybody for your advice much appreciated ( and to Jeangenie for the spelling correction .... lol .... never was a strong point .... ) will now include he is aware of the retained testis on the contract
I am in a breed where it is quite common to be told at 8 weeks only one and for them to be perfectly normal weeks later. Amazingly one dog I bred myself but was kept by a friend, was about a year old. They are so tiny at weeks they often cannot be felt.
