my dog has an abscess in his back tooth, the vet has had him on antibiotics or two weeks now and got another two weeks worth yesterday when i went back to the vets,
now a week ago the absecess burst and came out through his eye socket blood pus yuk we have been cleaning it every hour the vet said that the swelling is going down but he may have to have an xray to see if it is in the root of the tooth, and the back tooth may have to be removed if it is.
has anyone had an abscess in their dogs mouth and how long did it take to sort out
when we first noticed the swelling under his eye he would not eat or chew anything on that side of his face but now he is munching on that side now and looks so much happier

I have and chose to have it removed, as it was the huge triple upper caranasial tooth and treating it may well not have cured the issue.

This has not affected her show career negatively (I got permission to show) as she has won several CC's since (two last year) and 1 with BOB this year.

It hasn't stopped her chewing bones etc either.

A friends bitch had one while pregnant and the vet wanted to have it out once pups were 6 weeks old as he wasn't happy to administer AB's that were strong enough to deal with it during pregnancy.

In her case it burst a few days before whelping and currently is healing, and I assume she will have it done when pups are weaned.

What was the cause; a slab fracture of the molar is the most usual cause.

There was a small pin prick hole in one of the points of the tooth.

My first three dogs went to their graves with full dentition and pretty clean teeth especially Elka and Kizi whose teeth stayed white rather than a bit creamy.

Our Jozi lost a front incisor because of an invasive epulis, but Lexi is the first one to loose a big one.

they cannot actually see anything wrong with his tooth but if this last dose of antibiotics does not work he is going under the anesthetic to let them have a look and see what is going on

The best tablets are anti robe. I had bitch with a similar problem afew years ago and was put on this it cleared it up and never had to have the tooth out.

I agree - antirobe is my vets choice always when it's dental.  Wonder why?

just checked the packet and antirobe is what we have.
today the swelling has gone right down the pus is still comming out the eye socket but not a huge amount i am now back to every half hour with a warm cloth wiping under the eye socket where the swelling was, and then with cotton wool and a saline solution wiping away the pus from the eye itself the redness of the eye has started to subside as well i think and fingers crossed we may of turned a corner.
