Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / just lost another puppy :(
- By MandyC [gb] Date 03.05.12 16:15 UTC Edited 03.05.12 16:17 UTC
i had to put to sleep a little puppy from my litter 3 weeks ago when it was just 3 days old due to it suddenly fading, well everyone else was well until last thursday when another puppy stopped nursing for no apparent reason, she was given antibiotics and supplement feeding along with puppy stim and on the friday and saturday was back to her normal self feeding well, then sunday afternoon she crashes again along with a second pup, another vet visit and more ab's for the second pup and fluids for the first one.

well for 4 days solid every hr i have been feeding, medicating, and administering sub q fluids for her and she continued to worsen, yesterday she began vomiting and was pitiful today so i made the decision with my vet to say enough is enough as she had began to suffer and clearly had discomfort. just back from the vets and the other sick puppy who had picked up well is now vomiting too and not feeding again just like the first.

The rest all wanted to play but after their feed when everyone went poop, every single puppy has severe diarrhea, my vets suspects herpes which i have never had before and i am terrified of losing the whole litter. i am keeping the temperature very high as i know the virus cant cope with high temperatures but i am absolutely devastated not to mention exhausted beyond belief, i havent left my living room in over 5 days and had no sleep as i was nursing little girl every hr.....so upset that i couldnt save her and now it looks like i will lose at least another one puppy and all of them are ill :(((((

What an awful time for you, I am so sorry.

Can you source bloods from a bitch that has been vaccinated and recently had a litter like someone else on here had to do recently.
- By Esme [gb] Date 03.05.12 16:43 UTC
Sorry, I don't have any practical advice to offer, just wanted to say my thoughts are with you. Hope the rest of the pups will pick up. At three weeks they should be getting stronger soon if you have any luck.

You must be absolutely shattered, take care.

Oh Mandy love!  {{{{  HUGS  }}}}

I second the blood from a vaccinated bitch - PUT OUT AN ALERT!  On facebook, anywhere.  Someone had such success with this a few weeks back.  Amazing how decent dog folk will go all out to help each other.

I believe a courier service may have been used, but can't remember the full details.

Good Luck!

Mandy,  my bitch had a litter in November last year and had her vaccinations in March this year. If that is helpful I would be prepared to offer blood if you are able to tell me exactly what is involved.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 04.05.12 06:47 UTC
It's a bitch who's been vaccinated against herpes that's needed, I'm afraid.
- By baileca [gb] Date 04.05.12 06:54 UTC
What I thought, such a terrible shame.
- By Tyddhound [gb] Date 04.05.12 08:14 UTC
How recently does the bitch have to have been vaccinated against Herpes.....does it have to have been recently, like in the last few weeks or could you use a bitch who had the vaccination say 6 months ago?
- By BenjiW [gb] Date 04.05.12 09:29 UTC
(((Mandy))) can't even begin to imagine what you are going through
- By Carrington Date 04.05.12 09:35 UTC
So sorry Mandy, I hope that you do not lose anymore. {{{hug}}}
- By rocknrose [gb] Date 04.05.12 10:51 UTC
Yes how recent does the CHV vaccine have to have been given? Does it stay forever in a bitch? I have a bitch who has been vaccinated against it but it was  a couple of years ago. Probably no use, but if its OK then I am here.

as suspected i had to put to sleep my other very sick girl, giving her fluids under her skin, puppy stim, syringe feeding every hr, nothing worked she continued to waste away and then starting vomiting everytime she woke up, wasnt fair and despite everything i had to do what was right for her. have just brought her home and put her with her sister and buried them together all cuddled up.

God my eyes are so puffy i can barely see out of them :(

have battled for 10 days with both the little girls but they were just to small and the virus wiped them out.

My other 9 have improved and all poo's are nearly normal, please god let the rest of my babies continue to improve i cant bare the thought of making another trip with another puppy it breaks me everytime.

Thanks for everyone's comments X

- By Missie Date 07.05.12 11:24 UTC
Just a thought but if the bitch had been given the CHV vaccine 2 weeks before whelping, could her blood serum be used to give the pups?
- By parrysite [gb] Date 10.05.12 09:33 UTC
Hi Mandy,

How are the rest of the pups? Thinking of you and the dogs!
