The pups are now 2 weeks old, and about to have their first lot of worming (Panacur 10%), my question is, should I be doing mum again at this point? I can't find anything on the box to tell me
- By Chatsworth [gb] Date 02.05.12 09:55 UTC
I always worm Mum at the same time as the pups, I give her the same dose as when she was pregnant.

When pups have gone to new homes I worm the whole gang with a normal dose for their weight.

I do exactly the same as Chatsworth

The correct recommended way is -

Pups for 3 days as per weight instruction.

Dam, not the pregnancy dose (which is only a quarter dose anyway.)    Dam has the normal adult dose for 1 day only.

I use Drontal puppy liquid, 1ml per kg of weight at 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 6 weeks and worm the bitch on those days. I then worm the bitch after the last pup leaves. I used Panacur with my last litter but find Drontal affects their stools far less.

That's interesting about a pregnancy dose being different. My vet gave me a normal adult dose for my bitch and I wormed her every 2 weeks according to the vets instructions.

Remember that you have said you use Drontal.  The OP's question was about Panacur 10% and my reply was regarding recommendations for Panacur, not Drontal.

Yes I realised Jean that was why it would be different. I just found it strange that with Panacur they give half doses for pregnant bitches but with Drontal you use full doses. I wonder why that is?

The pregnancy dose is a quarter (not half) of normal adult dose, given from day 40 to 2 days post whelp for the encysted worms woken up by the bitches pregnancy hormones.  I don't know the doses for pregnant bitches with any other wormer, as I had always believed that Panacur was the only wormer licensed for use on a pregnant bitch.

I guess it was the first that was licensed in the UK, and as I had never had a problem with it, I never researched anything that gained acceptance later down the years.

As far as i know it is still the only one specifically licenced for pregnancy in any species, based on the notes in the NOAH compendium.

Oh blimey you had me worried there. I've googled and found several vet sites that say Drontal plus is fine for pregnant bitches. Thank goodness for that though it's a bit late as the pups are doing great at 7 weeks old! And my vet did prescribe it knowing my bitch was pregnant. But the same vet prescribed me steroidal ear drops too hence the concern! But as the websites are numerous saying it's fine in pregnancy I am relaxing. I think.

NOAH says about Drontal Plus: Use During Pregnancy and Lactation
Consult a veterinary surgeon before treating pregnant animals for roundworms.
The product may be used during lactation.
Do not exceed recommended dose when treating pregnant bitches.
