Topic Dog Boards / General / Breeding as a business

Can anyone advise me on this matter.
I cannot find work since relocating and thought i should really get sorted out with the tax man etc to pay my NI contributions.
I breed a couple of litters a year, occasionally sell a trained gundog etc but can anyone advise me on the business side and whether I should register as a business although its so small scale it seems not worth it or registering as self employed for example.
Would I get a business account for this as it would help with getting cash and carry membership etc.
Any pointers appreciated as I am not sure what is best to do.

you can set up as a sole trader doing almost anything if you want to get cash & carry membership etc... you don't have to be 'making any money', once you are set up in such a way though I can see that the tax man will take some interest - and it will cost money to have a bank account... you will have to keep records so that should you make money then they will ask for the tax.  You should ask about insurance contributions, I don't think you have to actually be making any money to pay these either....

Thanks PennyGC, it was due to enquiring about a cash and carry that brought it up.
I think once you counted for food, vets bills, fuel etc there wouldn't be much left to really call a business.
Will look into the sole trader aspect then.

Re. the cash and carry - if you're talking about Batleys, they've recently upped their criteria quite a bit, and businesses have to be spending at least £200-300 a month as I understand, as well as having insurance and a host of other things in place.

It is Batleys.
Everyone and their dog has an account there.
I could spend that no problem so just waiting to hear back.

I haven't heard about having to spend a minimum amount per month at Batleys, but there is a minimum per visit through the pet side.  They've just done a reregistration exercise and now instead of just giving your number you have to show it... but I think it's cos a number of people were simply giving their number to friends, rules are you can take one extra person, but the card holder has to attend.  It certainly is a good saving, I go about every month/6 weeks.

Hopefully I manage to get a card then.
