Hi after a trip to my vets this morning i have came home wondering if i have done the right thing.My girl has been scratching her ears for around three weeks now and when i took her to the vets back then he said they looked ok.Now three weeks down the line she is scratching excessively and whimpers cause its painfull.He had a good look inside today and ruled out ear mites as her ears were clean but they are very red.She is 53days pregnant so i was concerned that when the puppies are born if she is still scratching with great force that she will badly injure them.The vet said ear drops are not advised for pregnant dogs and it would be a risk if we gave her them.In the end i left with antibiotics and epi-otic ear cleaner just to play safe.He said once the pups are here he would feel happy putting her on ear drops when the pups are a couple of days old although lacating bitches shouldnt get ear-drops he feels that should be fine.Do you think i have done the right thing as feel so sorry for my girl.x

I am sure there is something herbal and soothing which can be used in her ears whilst she is pregnant.  I found the washes provided by my vet really irritated and distressed my dog.  Next time I will use something else.  Sorry - I can't remember if it was on this forum where people mentioned soothing alternatives for ears (apple cider?).  I would also do a bit of research online - there must be something which can help - it can't be good for her to be stressed and uncomfortable when pregnant.

Warm olive oil is very soothing.  I find that and baby wipes as effective as vets ear cleaners.

My girls seem to get hormonal ears, seasons and pregnancy seem to be the only time their ears get a little mucky and occasionally sore.

My bitch had ear infections in early pregnancy and we were told by the vet she couldn't have the anti-inflamatory injection due to her pregnancy so he gave her an anti-biotic jab and gave us ear drops. It cleared up but the other ear became infected so we went back and were told she shouldn't have had the ear drops as they were steroidal and a risk in pregnancy! So that time we were given the ear wash you have been given and the antibiotics and it cleared the infection just as well. Her ears are lovely and clear and pale pink now. I worried like you wouldn't believe about the possible risk to the puppies as the vet had given me steroidal ear drops despite knowing she was pregnant. Apparently the risk is the placentas can come away early and cause miscarrigae. In the end the pups were born on day 63 and are healthy and well but it was a worry.

Basically the ear wash and anti-biotics cleared the second ear brilliantly so what you have should be fine and work well. Much better than having the worry I had by being given the wrong thing.

Esme had a sore looking ear when I took her to the vets at 4 weeks (hadn't as then been confirmed pregnant). As she "may" have been pregnant the vet wouldn't give me ear drops (as someone else mentioned the contain steroids), but she did prescribe "fucithalmic vet eye drops" to be applied to the affected ear as it was non-steroidal. It worked a treat!

hi my girl had a bad ear late into pregnancy she had drops that cleared it up different drops to last time as i made sure vet knew she was pregnant

We had the same thing with a pregnant bitch. Our vet said she couldn't be given antibiotics so he prescribed eardrops called Otoclean. They are a cleaner, they come in little bottles and we had to put one in each day for, I think, a week. We were told they were safe in pregnancy. When we took her back, her ears were fine, nice and clean with no visible infection.

Seems to me that ear infections are not unusual in pregnant bitches. We've had two now with different bitches, and it's not an uncommon question on here. Not sure why though. Good luck with your girl brownie.

Must admit until reading this thread I hadn't realised it could be linked to hormones.
