Topic Dog Boards / Health / Bleeding after spay

Ok, anyone have any experiences. I have just been to collect my girl after a routine spay. She has started dripping blood so they tried a body bandage but that isn't working so are now waiting until end of surgery hours to see how she is. Her colour is good but she is still dripping (and on a pale dog is looking like a massacre) I have never had a bitch do this, should I be worried. My Vet is fantastic and I wouldn't entrust my dogs to anyone else but obviously I am concerned about her.

I recently had my old girl spayed but my vet left in drains which dripped blood for a few days.  She never had much leakage from the wound at all really.  I would be concerned too.

Spoken to the nurse who says they haven't taken the bandage off yet as they want the Vet to do it and check it then. It is not a common occurence. He will only do this after surgery hours (7ish). We have said that we will be at the surgery at 7 as their phones go off after 6.30 so we won't be able to contact them and we are not waiting not knowing what is going on. I am really worried as we have never had this happen before even though we have had spays, pyometras and cesarians.

Yes, this happened with one of ours after a spay. We took her back and the vet took the bandage off and checked the wound. It looked OK so he reapplied the bandage, but a bit tighter. It seemed to do the trick, although our bitch seemed in a good deal of pain and was given a jab of, I think Vetagesic(?) Anyway, it settled down after that but was a worry at the time.

Hope your girl is OK AlisonGold.

Just back from the Vets. She is still bleeding so he is going back in to see what it is, he thinks she may have pulled a stitch. They did bloods and all okay. We will be getting her back tonight though and he will phone as soon as he has looked inside and stopped it. He always goes the extra mile. Oh, and he is on duty tonight so I can always call if I have a problem. Thanks everybody.

we are nearly 4 weeks post-spay with our goldie, and whilst she didn't bleed afterwards, she gave us cause for concern for nearly 2 weeks.  Happy to say she is fine now thank goodness.

Just wanted to say all the best for you and your girl and i very much sympathise with your worry.

Let us know how she gets on

Had the phone call. Couldn't find anything specifically bleeding but has put a couple of extra sutures in and the bleeding has stopped. Just waiting for the call to pick her up.

Well we got her back after 9pm. Poor little devil had been opened up twice. She was very dazed by the whole experience. Problem was she was still dripping blood but my Vet, knowing how we are, allowed us to take her home. He then had to travel to Liverpool and is was on call all night. He phoned us about an hour after we got home but funnily enough she had stopped dripping blood on arrival at home (only 10 minutes away from Vets) and we had a fairly quiet night with her. This morning she was still very dazed but insisted on coming to the park with the others (she was driven to the park). It did however wipe her out and she has slept most of the morning. Looks a bit brighter now and is walking around the house a bit and has just eaten some chicken which she was refusing earlier today as the only things she would tolerate was Markies! There has been no sight of blood since we left the Vets but we have no intention of taking the body bandage off any time soon. Our Vet phoned again this morning so he will be relieved as well. My poor little girl, I have never had anything like this happen before. Thanks for the good thoughts.

I'm always so nervous when a dog come home after surgery but that is nothing compared to the sheer relief & joy. Hope all goes well for her, fingers & paws crossed for you all.
