My mum has got me worried yet again, she has seen an advert on tv about lung worm and says vet gives her dogs advocate plus something else for the lungworm, i only use advocate, do i need to use something else to prevent the lungworm ?

I think Advocate is enough to prevent lungworm but you do have to treat your dog for tapeworm - once a year I believe because that is the one worm that isn't covered by Advocate.

Panacur has always cured lungworms in any livestock - we've used it for decades on the farm, with my parrots and dogs.

NO - Panacur does NOT treat the lungworm mentioned by the OP !!! Panacur treats "Oslerus (Filaroides) osleri", a tracheal worm in dogs, affects the lungs and bronchi.
The lungworm mentined by the OP as shown on tv recently is "Angiostrongylus vasorum", also known as French HEARTWORM, this lives in the heart and major blood vessels. Panacur does NOT treat this type which is becoming more and more of a threat in the UK.

I think the OP was talking about prevention not cure. I am sure that the vet gave me panacur liquid when my dog had a cough that wouldn't clear up and I was worried my dog had lungworm - but I may be wrong it was a few years ago now.

Yes the OP was talking about prevention but I replied to another poster who said Panacur was suitable and it is not. You are correct years ago Panacur was prescribed but if you read my previous post it is for another type of lungworm, not the variety the OP has seen on the tv.
Very important to know the difference.
So what is the treatment then?

Always speak to your own vet.
Advocate is licensed to treat lungworm in the UK.

For french lungworm my vet prescribed 2 5 day courses of panacur. Puppy seems ok now but I would hate for it to recur

What is French Lungworm?
bleh - should proof read!
French heartworm sorry
Hmm - I was planning on asking my vet for Advocate this time. Interesting though that the infection did clear with the panacur treatment. I guess although it is not on there as a specific treatment it may work over a long period like that. I had horses for a long time so I know a lot of the time wormers are somewhat effective on worms generally as well as their target group. And poor little pudding had Giardia too so would have needed the panacur anyway

No where did the OP make mention of anything other than Lungworm which by your own admission I am correct in saying Panacur was and is a treatment for.
If you were correct in your assumption that I had seen said advert then I could see the point in your aggressive response unfortunately that is all it is an ASSUMPTION!
My vet also treated my dog for French Heartworm with Panacur liquid, was a treatment done over 7 days, at a different dosage than normal worming.
Only Advocate is licenced for the prevention of lungworm.
Advocate for dogs can control heartworm as well as external parasites such as fleas, lice and mites in dogs .

i use milbemax which covers all worms, although some collie breeds cant take it ???
jo

I'm using monthly Advocate ( preventative) on my boy, but monthly Panacur ( treatment) on my girl as she developed a reaction to Advocate that progressively got worse at each treatment over 3 months. Her last treatment, we treated her as if she actually had lungworm, over a 7 day period - we will probably do this twice a year as we live in a lungworm area :-(. There are many documents on the web showing that panacur and milbemax are effective treatments for angiostrongylus vasorum ( the french heartworm on the tv ads) even if the data sheets don't document the fact.

One of our dogs had French Lungworm, treatment was a large dose of Milbemax, administered at the vets because of the risk of shock, treatment worked but the infection left him with an enlarged heart, heart failure and damage to his lungs, prevention is far better than cure.
Preventative treatment is now panacur twice a year for the him and the others, as advised by our vet.
