Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Pup weeing on bed?

What would you do with a pup that's been TRAINED to pee in it's bed?  This breeder had been covering the entire whelping box with blankets and when the pups were getting out the box to run about, they were returning to the bed to pee!! So now, pup thinks it's fine to pee on it's bed so crate training is not going to work.  Should I recommend putting the urine soaked sheet under some paper in the hopes that it learns to go on the paper? Or should they just keep cleaning the bed till the message gets through?  How would you re-train something like this?  Pup will 'go' outside and seems to be getting the message but at night, it just goes when it wants to.

If its a coated breed i would remove anything soft in it's sleeping place, as that is what it was using to toilet on.  Sounds horid to nao bedding, but that hopefully should break the cycle.

I'd move the bedding too.

The habit needs to be broken and if the bedding isn't there it can't soil it.

I have just been through this with my now 61/2 month old GSD, i stopped it by putting a plastic dog bed in her pen it was big enough for her to be comftable in but small enough not to have room to toilet in. We are now at the stage where we have removed (left it 4 weeks to break the habbit) the dog bed and she has a thin blanket and in a few weeks i will try vet bed finger crossed by the the habbit has been broken.

Agree with rest of advice here. A strong association has been made between soft materials and weeing indoors so you've got to break that association and form a new one. In addition to other advice here I'd set your alarm good and early 5am or even 3.30am and get up to take them out to pee, ditto 11/12pm for last widdle before bed.

Any accidents inside clean immediately and wipe over lightly with surgical spirit. Ensure that any bedding materials they have used thus far, as well as floor area tec.. is also scrupulously cleaned. There should be no widdle traces to stimulate further weeing.

This will not go overnight because their little bladders need time to develop and there will be accidents, but if you stick rigidly to thorough cleaning each time, as well as removing materials strongly associated with weeing inside, and take them out as much as possible, including late night early morning- you can crack it.

Thanks everyone who replied.  Pup is older, 14 wks so can go through the night as proven last night! Barbara, I passed on your advice to my frazzled friend and it worked a treat.  Poor pooch had no bed but was totally clean/dry overnight.  Now to crack the association with outdoors and not bedding! She wanders about crying looking for her bed till eventually she just goes.  It's such a shame.  But, she is getting plenty of encouragement whenever she gets it right so hopefully she'll crack it all soon.

What about pegging a bit of beddign (that has had ti and can be thrown away) outside where you want her to go.  Then make it smaller and smaller (perhaps burying the edges), gettinh smaller and smaller.

That was going to be the next option but taking away all the bedding has worked all week.  Seems the pup has got it fast.  Cries and gets a bit worried as she's still not sure where to go but is getting there.
Thanks for your input.
