I've mentioned what breed I own several times and I've seen others do the same and never thought anything of it. I'd read the terms of service in full when I joined this site and the warning and FAQ at the top of the Breeding section of the forums which are the only ones I am posting in and had never seen any mention of not being allowed to mention your breed. I never knowingly break rules so hadn't realised I have.

I was looking for a thread that I posted on yesterday which I think was titled "I could scream" or something, I posted about bad breeding practices I have heard of. I can't find that thread and don't know where it went. But in my search for it I went to the list of 'notifications' on the threads I have taken part in and saw that one of my previous posts has been deleted and beside that was written "Reason: Please stop asking what breed the OP has - she is not allowed to post this info!!!"

I apologise for asking, I had no idea I wasn't allowed to and that we are not allowed to post what breeds we have. Despite reading the terms of service and other info pages I missed totally the rule where we were told we mustn't mention our breeds. Please can this be made clearer so that others do not miss this rule? I've yet to find it, as I say, had I known I wouldn't have asked.

If in doubt.... if it smacks of informing others what breed a litter or mother of a litter is...then its a no no.

Second post in the Breeding Section, a sticky, under the heading WARNING in capitals :)

That doesn't say you shouldn't mention what breed you have? Maybe the terms should be clearer.

As I say, I have mentioned what my breed is and I didn't know it was wrong, I didn't knowingly break the rules and I've talked to other breeders here and they wouldn't have assumed those terms of service meant you couldn't mention what breed of dog your dog is either.

I've changed my avatar as that made my breed obvious too.

The poster on that thread hadn't mentioned any puppies for sale and wasn't advertising at all.

I think this makes it clear that the moderators have concerns that some posts are indirect advertisements of litters.
You are free to mention your breed, or ask others, in other sections where there is no question of a litter, or proposed litter being discussed though.
 

Yes that's fine, I hadn't taken that thread as an advertisement and I realise the moderators have a right to make any decision they choose and I'm not questioning that at all.

The trouble is, Benji, that every so often we see posts like this "Hi, my name is greedybreeder, and my little chihuaha-cross shitzu is having her first litter of puppies in three weeks time - what do I need to get for her?"

Or "hi, my cocker spaniel has mated with next door's poodle and I didn't know it and we've now got 10 puppies ..what do we do"

Obviously these people are just trying to find cheap ways to advertise their puppies!!!

So the ruling was made a long time ago, that there was to be no mention of the breed concerned in any posts on breeding so that there could be absolutely no chance of free advertising.   Of course people who just read the Active Topics don't see that note at the top of the forum on breeding, and so they will ask "what breed"?

On topic, not sure if I read the rule re discussing breeds we own in the 'breeding' section in the t&c's of the site but I've seen old hands mentioning it before to others.

It's fine to mention your breed except when you have a litter of pups - that can be interpreted as advertising, which isn't allowed on the forum.

It's perfectly okay to say things like "My labrador's coat is moulting badly - what should I do?" or "My Jack Russell was stuck down a rabbit hole for three days - we thought we'd lost him forever" or "I've got a new dachshund puppy!" and so on - just not things like "My Ruritanian Tripehound has just had a litter of 10 puppies!"

I know what breed you have BenjiW and I'm pretty certain you've mentioned about having pups? (maybe mixing you up?) in 2 different topic/sections but still doesn't take long to work it out.
I made the same mistake.  Not knowingly putting the info on here but just trying to let people know how you know their situation(if that makes sense!lol).
I don't know why it's such a big deal, to be honest.  If people wanted to advertise thier litters, they could just use the breeders section of this site like we all do so why it's a big deal, I don't know.  Maybe if we had a pups available section, we could show people the difference between good and bad.  You know, are the parents health check, etc so their advert would then show people looking that the breeder has not done all they could?  Just thinking out loud:)

Yes I have mentioned having pups several times I think. Totally unknowing I was doing anything wrong. Probably mentioned my breed somewhere and on other posts asking for advice re my litter I might possibly have mentioned the two things in the same thread I'm not sure. It wouldn't occur to me to advertise puppies by talking about a litter on a forum so this is new to me. I just wanted to apologise for doing something wrong and say I personally (and others here) don't think the terms and conditions are that clear. The way you explained it there jeangenie is clear, so might be worth making it as clear as that in the terms and conditions.

I must admit I felt the way the explanation of why my post was deleted was worded and the use of punctuation was unecessarily harsh having been a community leader online on other forums elsewhere, it's not the way I would have worded it. I hadn't knowingly done anything wrong and an explanation would have been fine and I won't do it again.

Having read some of your posts BenjiW I really dont think you were trying to pull a fast one.I do agree that the tone of the 'rebuke' seemed a tad harsh however chill out.......after all you have a litter of pups to look after !

Because the people who pay to advertise on the site would rightly be a bit annoyed if there was free advertising on the Forum!

We pay to advertise litters, you cannot do it with the basic free breeder listing.

unfortunatly not all of us are as genuine as others and there will be the sly ones who do have hidden meanings behind their posts x

I had already spent a considerable amount of time editing various posts on that thread only to have you again ask what the poster's breed was (even though it had already been stated that this was a small utility breed) so you must forgive me if on this occasion I was feeling somewhat impatient and also did not have the time to spare to send you a long winded explanation. I'm sorry if I did not word my brief explanation for editing your post as you would have done yourself - I personally would have asked privately for an explanation about any moderating decision on a forum I wasn't happy with but we all have different ideas of forum etiquette ;-)
