My Border Terrier has been diagnosed with diabetes, he'll be 8 in October this year. Initially I was quite shocked to find out his situation thinking it would have happened at an earlier age, but apparently it seems to occur during the age of 7 - 9yrs. I've done a quick search on here but haven't been able to locate anything in great detail.
Does anyone have dogs with this health issue? I have been injecting insulin twice a day (to the dog...not me) as directed by the vet and must say, and very glad to, that the blood test today had improved since diagnosis last week. Got to return again next week to see the progress with a further blood test.
Any encouragement and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you :o)

My first akita was diagnosed at aged 8 with this. You are lucky as apparently it's easier to control in smaller dogs. My boy did really well for a few months but then it started affecting his kidneys but before that, he was a lot better on the meds. And it just becomes a way of life with the injections.
sadly my mums baby boy died yesterday :( he had lived with diabetes for afew years ,he made it to 8years old but was diagnosed when he was just over 2 ,dylon became very fat even tho you MUST stick to the same times for feeding and the same amont of food at each meal...try to stay away from giveing food inbetween meal times because this messes about with his sugars dylon also was prone to infection, and his eye sight was going ...he sufferd with stress after being diagnosed, i too im diabetic so to be far theres not much difference with me and the dogs :(
wishing you all the best with your boy (((hugs))) x
just wanted to say dylon was a king charles ...very small till this took hold of him xx

Gosh, I know this is a life time condition, and I am coming to terms and getting the injections right - Thank you both for your posts, informative and also sad. Edward is here beside me now....asleep! I always make the most of every day with him, but it seems even more precious time now. He is my world and I love him to bits. Let's hope that the next blood test continues a decrease in the glucose count and we get the balance right sooner rather than later.
Once again, many thanks for sharing your information with me.

Well, sad to say we've just returned from the check up on the glucose at the Vet's and this week it's raised to 24+. This is a huge shock to me, and I have had to book Edward for an all day session at the surgery on Monday for a Glucose Curve Test. Not so straight forward as I thought this was going to be....
Roll on Monday, lets see what and why this is happening.
