Topic Dog Boards / Health / A cloudy mark in my girls eye, tied in with hypothyroidism?
- By Frogs [gb] Date 15.04.12 15:38 UTC
Hi all
My 3 yr old girl has been in Soloxine for about 9 mths, after being dx'd with autoimmune hypothyroidism, she has made magic steps forward in that time and appears as a fit healthy glossy happy (well mostly) young girl, far far better than she was prior to treatment.

I have just noticed a cloudy spot in her left eye, in the middle, will be taking her to the vet tomorrow, a bit of a google reveals a possible link to cholesterol/hypothyroidism and corneal problems.
I just wondered if anyone had any experience of such an issue?
The cloudy eye thing is about 6mm diameter round ish in shape...

TIA

Yes, it is high cholesterol. i have had a bitch with this who is on a very low fat diet & her eyes are now clear. it has taken time & careful feeding. The vet reassured me it wasnt hereditry(although I havnt had a litter from her but did try just the once) & he said she would have a blurry vision with the spots(she had 2 or 3 small ones). It was worse in one eye more than the other but is totally clear now & nobody would know looking at her. She clearly saw the rat running across my driveway yesterday..bloody thing!!

If it is cholesterol then a review of the meds would be a good idea - high cholesterol often goes hand-in-hand with hypothyroidism, and it could be a sign that she's undermedicated.

> high cholesterol often goes hand-in-hand with hypothyroidism

Not in my bitches case, she only has high cholesterol & no other illness...

I meant when the dog already has hypothyroidism, high cholesterol is very often present (as in people).  Worded it badly, sorry.

The vet is redoing her thyroid tests tomorrow and doing a cholesterol slide, she also is going to check for pancreatitis
She had full blood panels done just 3 weeks ago as her T4 was showing high, but if we drop her dose she instantly goes lethargic and loses her appetite.
Her ears have ear margin vasculitis which disappeared when she first started Soloxine last year but it has now come back...

I do think there is more going on than simply hypothyroidism but I do not know what
She also has not had had a season since starting meds 9 mths ago, she used to have seasons every 5 mths lasting 9 weeks and then anorexic phantoms, since meds - nothing

All very strange, I do wish to spay her but the vet wanted her to have a season so we did the spaying at the right time in her cycle....

All very confusing though
Thanks for the info so far

oh and they suggested feeding Chappie :>\

Not noting that she is allergic to fish

am investigating low fat diets but she is so fussy I dread it
Currently she has CSJ adult and raw Prize Choice tripe mince and homemade veg fruit mix...

Could be worth looking at the soloxine - not sure if it's the same for dogs but some people don't get on with the usual thyroxine pills due to lactose in them, also some people just don't get on with some brands for whatever reason.

Do make sure her T3 levels are checked also - very uncommon in dogs but I wonder if she is not converting the T4 to T3 properly.  It would possibly explain why she needs her levels so high to feel the benefit (low conversion rate would need high T4 to provide enough T3).  My boy doesn't convert properly - his T4 was more than double the top of the range back in november but no physical effects shown at all (still hypothyroid in symptoms).  He's now on a much lower soloxine dose (and now working down to nothing) and T3 pills on top, and he is vastly improved (as are his levels).

Also worth asking here:

It's a quiet group but some knowledgeable peeps on there.

not good that she cant have fish..I will say that Tripe will be too high in fat though for the Cholesterol(this is what my bitch was on previously). My bitch has skinless breast of chicken & JWB dry food...

yes I can see this is going to take some planning
