I HAVE A LAB PUP WHICH IS FED ON BETA PUPPY HAS BEEN SINCE 6 WEEKS OLD HAD ALL INJECTIONS BUT HAS NOW DEVELOPED SOFT STOOLS WITH MUCUS AND JELLY LIKE STUFF IN IT. HE HAS BETA DRIED AND A BOWL OF WATER IS ALWAYS AVAILABLE. HE IS FIT AND WELL AND LEAPING AROUND, CHEWING HE DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE ILL OR IN ANY DISCOMFORT. HE IS NOT PASSING STOOLS MORE FREQUENT THAN HE NORMALLY DOES. DOES NOT SEEM TO HAVE LOST ANY WEIGHT. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE ADVISE.

Ther is a problem which can manifest it's self in this way. Very carefully collect a sample making sure you don't mix the mucus in and let your vet see it. The chances are you don't have a problem but from the way you describe it I would take no chance.

Thanks for replying to the question about loose stools. I took dog to vets she gave anitbiotic injection because lymph nodes were up in neck area also gave antispadmodic tabs for 5 days things improved within 2 days stools became normal but since then mucus and soft stools have returned. The dog is otherwise fit and when vet examined him could not find anything wrong she said he is alert and in good condition. Though it may be something like colitis but he is not straining or doing little bits all over the place he is going normally but is very soft and mucussy, I thought perhaps the beta puppy food may be too much for him but he has been on it dry from 6 weeks of age when we got him from breeder, he weights 12 kilos but does not look fat or chunky as he is from a working mother and ftch stud father I dont think he will be fat and chunky.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

regards

Russ I think you may need to change the food .
Mucous is a sign that the bowel is not 100% ok so do it now before it it gets to a stage that will need treatment.
I would be going natural diet if I found mucous but there are some very good alternatives out there as well. I have been hearing great reports about autarky and nutro.
You have nothing to lose by changing the food and all to gain if the food your using is the cause of it

Mari

What food can you suggest and where do you obtain it from?
- By russ [gb] Date 19.01.03 16:42 UTC
John

Which tinned food do you recommend? shall i mix complete with the tinned?
which problem could manifest?
Should I get vet to have another look at him?
He also seemes to have very waxy ears which smell what do you think am cleaning with ear wipes every day, should vet check out as well. Pup not rubbing ears and hearing not affected.

Russ,
Just a thought, you say he appears fine and is chewing, what is he chewing? Is it rawhide, a bitch of mine would get mucous in her stools if she had too much rawhide,

He is just chewing on hands, feet, paper, I have a solid hide bone shape chew which he sometimes chews on but does not seem to take any pieces off it.

thanks for reply but dont think it is the things he is chewing on.

If you have discounted any other problems, could it be that he is just getting too much food ? Our pup had very soft and voluminous stools and we were advised to cut out one of her meals, then everything sorted itself out :) Our pup was 6 months at the time.

Daisy

Giving him as guided on the pack of beta puppy for his age approx 400g per day split in three meals giving him it dry but making sure he has plenty of water down at all times.

Hi Russ
just been looking at the threads one poster says you might be giving your dog to much, even though you might be going of the beta scale it still might be to much in quanitity :ie hills or jwb for that breed of dog and weight is a total of 300gms split into meals.

Hi
Our dobe puppy was on Beta when we got him and his poo was YAK
we tried a few ( gradually ) and pedigree seemed to agree with him --with nothing added and then at about 12 months we changed him to Autarky-which has been the bees knees:)
Someone else mentioned the amounts -now I know labs are lifes natural hoovers ;) but very often the amount on the bag is too much .
hope he gets sorted :)

Now I'm having panic attacks after reading (Link from SaraW) about feeding 25% less food than required to control hip dysplasia...I know this is only 1 element towards hip scores but I always like to keep my puppies well fed, having seen pups on "limited feeding", I do not think they carry the bone, body or condition I would want.

Oh, well in 3 months time, we'll know the good or bad news with Curtis

I would get your pup off of Beta, I would normally say go to Nutro but I've found out Nutro puppy has wheat in it!!!!! Which I was rather surprised at! I had Curtis on Burgess Supadog Puppy (From Pets at Home), their added cereal is rice not wheat and he looked ok on it.

I would definitely get the vet to check the ears out. This can give you major problems if left. The smell is very distinctive, clean ears smell clean and it’s one of my regular checks. I have a look then have a sniff, even if I can’t see anything I can sometimes smell trouble coming!

Food! As in all things, there is more than one way to skin a cat!

As I said, I use a mixture of tin and complete. I get away from puppy food as soon as possible because I want to bring my puppies on slowly. I’m inclined to feed alternatively something like Winalot Prime followed by something one of the cheaper foods like Bounce making up the shortfall in food with a complete.

Take no notice of the figure quoted on the tins or bags as regard to feeding quantities. To me they are well over the desirable figure and I never get anywhere near them! Unlike most show people I like to keep my puppies lean. Not skinny or under weight but nearer the lower end of the range. I find touch is the best guide. I like to be able to just feel the ribs through the flesh. If I can feel a hard outline the dog s too thin but if I cannot feel them then the puppy is too fat.

Others have their ways but that for what it’s worth is mine.

John,
Your words "Winalot Prime" leaped out of the screen at me!! Where do you get it from? We used to feed it many years ago to our old lab, but it seemed to vanish, to be replaced with another tinned Winalot, that wasn't a patch on the old Prime. I've been trying to find it again for literally years.

I'm assuming it's still around! That post was part of a longer email to Russ where I told him that the way I feed is to gradually increase the complete as the puppy gets older then reduce the tin until i'm only feeding complete. As the last time was around four years ago I could still get it then! My puppies always did well on it so I hope it's still around.

Best wishes, John

looks like Winalot Prime can be purchased from here

If that is the case it means it is still made - could a local Supermarket or Spar shop order you a tray from their suppliers maybe Jeangenie ?

SaraW :)

edit - just looked and going on the home page of that site it is possible it hasn't been updated for a while BUT maybe a friendly local store could check on their suppliers lists all the same

hhhhhuuuuummmmmmmmm - been looking here Winalot Dog Site and it does seem all the tins are now digestion+ stuff

SaraW who is wasting time coz she doesn't want to go to bed coz if she does it means it's closer to work tomorrow :(
