Topic Dog Boards / Health / BVA Eye Testing for French Bulldogs

Hi, I'm new to this forum so hoping I have put this in the right place.

I had my French Bulldog and Dobermann's eyes tested at a show under the BVA/KC/ISDS scheme. I noticed that my Dobermann's results appeared on the KC website however my Frenchie's didn't. I emailed to check whether I needed to send the paperwork and got the following response;

'We regret that we are unable to add your BVA eye test result for HC in French Bulldogs as it falls under the schedule B (conditions under investigation).'

Can someone please let me know what this means in English? The vet who tested her didn't say there were any problems with her eyes but I'm not sure whether this means there is a problem or whether it means something else.

Thanks in advance.

Many years ago, well before the DNA test for HC we and quite a few others in our breed used to get our Frenchie's eyes tested under the same scheme you mention also never appearing in the back of the BRS. Never asked why as the eye specialist doing the test always said that the eyes were fine. Now they have DNA testing for HC we've been using that (it's part of the silver level of the FBCE health scheme). It's a one off test rather than re-testing under the BVA/KC scheme every 18 months or so.

It means there is no requirement to eye test the breed, although there may soon be one as the KC is looking into it. They will not put results of breeds not required to be tested on the website -which I think is daft. I eye test both my Malinois and my Papillons and I have the same thing -the Mali results go up, the Papillon results do not. However CHAMPDOGS will publish the results if you have an account with them and send them copies to prove it has been done, and I give copies of the eye test certs to puppy buyers to prove it has been done. The Papillon breed council is also starting to collect test results so maybe it's something to query with your breed if they'd do?

With the results for the DNA test for HC you get a certificate from the AHT to say they're clear and what it means, it goes on the KC/AHT website, it's in the back of the BRS and if you do the FBCE silver level (after getting the bronze) it goes on the FBCE website and into their club booklets, well worth doing in my opinion.

Thank you both, that's really helpful and makes much more sense. I have just had a look at the FBCE website so will get going on those health tests as although I haven't yet decided whether to breed my Frenchie (such a huge decision)!, I think getting the health tests done will help me to decide what to do.

Hi - I asked about this as well as my breed also falls in the schedule B ( under investigation) category.
The eye panel collect all the results for schedule B and if a certain percentage are shown to have the condition they are testing for over a period of time then they move the condition to schedule A so testing for schedule B conditions as you have done is really important as this is what may eventually highlight a problem even though the results are not published with the KC .

Hi Roxanne, a lot of people with Frenchies who have no intention of breeding still do the bronze and silver levels just for their own peace of mind.

Oh I know and obviously that it the most important thing first and foremost. (I actually read my post back after and thought it sounded that way too). The possibility of breeding is not the only reason I want the health tests done, I just want to make sure I do it responsibly if I do, that's all I was trying to get at. I've emailed for the paperwork to get the bronze so as soon as that comes through I'll speak to my vet. Thanka again for your advice.
