a friend as just rang and asked if i could help her! ok she has a small breed pup he weighs just under 2kg adult weight will be around 5.5kg/8kg she has had him for a week and he has had the runs since ,the breeder told her pup was wormed 2days before she got him with 3ml of drontal puppy ,i havent got a bottle in but im sure this is way to much?? her pup is eating very well and very playfull!!...when she got him he was on pedigree puppy meat "that was it" and wasnt sure if thats why he had the runs? she started him on james wellbeloved abit each day ...ok so day 4 of him being with her she stopped all food cus there was a very small amount of blood and alot of snotty stuff in the poo???...so now im wondering if this pup has been wormed what do u think, shes going to vets in the morning but dont know what to say re worming?? do u think she should have him wormed?

thanks guys

Could be Giardia or Campylobacter.  Tell her to take a sample in with the pup.

Hi white lilly - the pup could just have colitis ( inflammation of the bowel) from the change of water etc. Tell her to put him on naturediet puppy - she can change him straight on to this - cut the tray into about 8 portions and feed 1 portion a meal - he has the runs anyway, so the total change won't matter. The vet will probably give a AB jab and something like canikur or a powder to sprinkle on the food, a probiotic. Make sure the pup's bottom isn't getting too sore - clean with a wet wipe.

My Louis was exactly the same, colitis with blood and mucus and after 2 meals of naturediet, his poo was at last, firm with no blood. I never feed dry food to a pup - it should be soaked first if you do.

Good luck to your friend - hope the little guy is well soon xxx

Whoopeeeeee! so glad it worked white lilly! :-D

If she finds the poos are becoming a bit soft, then she should cut it down slightly, as too much food will make the poos softer( and make them go more often!!! ;-) ). She should keep an eye on his weight to make sure he doesn't get too porky. I was feeding a third of the pack a day when he was very tiny. He went up to half a pack a day in two feeds, then the little numpty went off it...lol. I now will always feed pups ND, then switch to raw minces and nuggets.

Just to say, the food is very protein rich without fillers, so although it may not look like she's feeding much, it is nutrient rich and will be more than enough :-)
