Topic Other Boards / Foo / Extra leg room on long haul flight
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 09.04.12 16:20 UTC
We have a 12 hr flight booked with BA for 10 days away, I know which seats I need to book for extra leg room but you can't book them until 14 days prior to the flight (you can book any other normal seat now for a small cost but not the more spacious ones). Has anyone tried this extra leg room booking 14 days before and was it successful?
I can imagine a lot of people attempt it so it's a bit like winning the lottery, though they do cost extra.
Not sure that the travel agency can book these for us but will ring them tomorrow.

ring the agents as i think you may be able to arrange these seats between them. We asked thomson when we booked about extra leg room seats but all were sold out. Also some may be avaliable when you check in.

Lucky you having two weeks, when I flew to Aus it was 24 hours before to book the seat you wanted.

BA charge if you want to pre book your seats, £25 per seat. You can choose your seat for free when you check in on line but that is no sooner than 24hrs before the flight. I suppose they do it to make extra cash plus put a bit of panic in travellers that unless they do it they might not get to sit with their family's/partners etc.
I don't mind paying for getting the extra leg room seats but unless the other seats look like they're getting reserved i'll wait til I check in 24 hrs before the flight.

Just wondered if anyone had managed to get these seats via the BA website.

If you're fit and healthy get in line first and request emergency exit seats for extra leg room. They can't dish those out without making sure you are fit to sit there!

Or if the flight is likely to be sold out or overbooked depending on destination I'd arrive and book in as one I the last and very likely then to be upgraded, it's a risk but I've asked how booked they are when I arrive at the airport, if fully booked I'm prepared not to sit with friends if it fails but always giving the upgrading a go!

BA man on the phone told me on the phone those exit seats can be booked 14 days prior to travel but you're right you have to be fit and healthy so there is no way of knowing that if you do it on line - perhaps they move you if don't look able bodied once you bored.
Don't think I would take the chance of late check in as wouldn't want to do the 12 hrs sat with a stranger and not my husband - I still like him too much!!

Depends what aircraft you'll be on too. My husband is 6'4" and has never needed extra legroom even on long haul. The only problem he ever had was a youngster sitting in front who kept playing with their seat back - a hostess put a stop to that !.

The exit row seats don't always appear in the "Manage My Booking" facility on BA's website at 14 days previously - in fact, I have never seen them do so, despite what their policy says.  They eventually appear at check-in, but get snapped up very quickly so you need to make sure that you are online just before 24 hours before take-off, pressing the refresh button.  I assume that as it's a 12-hour flight, you are flying east or south, and there is an added issue there in that you sometimes get American passengers connecting to these flights and they can check in earlier, at 24 hours prior to the take-off of the connecting flight from the US, which means that they get first dibs on those seats.

Also some of the seats in the exit row are bassinet seats, so if there are a lot of infants on the flight, you may find that they are pre-allocated to them.  And, yes, if you select one of the exit row seats online, you do have to tick a box to say that you are able bodied - I have seen them move someone once the flight boarded when it was clear they weren't!  If you don't manage to get one of the exit row seats, they sometimes offer paid upgrades at the airport to World Traveller Plus if World Traveller is overbooked.  My husband is also 6'6" and can't really fit in the economy seat but finds WT+ very comfortable and worth the extra money.

It's many years since I regularly flew long haul, but way back then the plane was rarely full. So I learnt from others, look around for a more comfortable seat that's empty, two together used to be my objective and when the air steward closes the doors 'move'. As I said it was sometime ago but on a long haul flight if there was extra room, I'd take it, if I didn't someone else would.

The flight is to Mauritius!! It will all be holiday makers. Going to ring travel company in a min and see what she can do.
It's not that either of us are really tall just didn't want to be a cramped seat for 12hrs if we can get a bit more room. WT+ is available going out but fully booked coming back so they offer club class instead but makes the cost very expensive and we could have another holiday on the extra cost.

Disappointed if those seats dont come up at 14 days, he definitely told me they would.

If you don't manage to get the exit row seats, it might be worth asking again at the airport about availability of World Traveller Plus.  On some routes BA seem to routinely overbook the economy cabin and will then need to start upgrading people.  We flew back from Mumbai last weekend (booked in WT+) and they offered us a paid upgrade to Club World for £375 each at check-in.  We declined, but then were upgraded for free anyway at the boarding gate.  The same happened another time when we flew back from Bangalore - if economy is overbooked, they start upgrading WT passengers to WT+, and then upgrade some WT+ passengers to Club World.

It sounds like the flight is fully booked then and being and overnight flight(generally) to MRU both ways I'd be seeking an upgrade both ways in order to get a bed!! Lol.. In all seriousness I'd rather be sleeping than getting grouchy on an overnighter on a flight!!

Ditto you Rosemarie, you just don't want to be the one checking in first to get upgraded and dress reasonably smart casual too!!
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 10.04.12 18:21 UTC
You can still buy economy seats & seems there are a few club class left! Lottery ticket for the next 3 weeks I think.

I did say I wouldn't want to be separated from husband but after the walk today I really wouldn't mind - he totally stresses me & the dogs out! I gave up and walked off with one dog following & left him to his own walk plus 3 dogs.
