Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Both dogs are always hungry....
- By lily10 [gb] Date 09.04.12 11:00 UTC
Hi, I have 2 dogs both girls, they are both scavenging food. They are fed the same amount and same times they have always been fed and this has also worked well.

I have always noticed with our older girl after having a season a few weeks later she does want more too eat, both girls were in season a month ago and wonder if this is something to do with it, do your dogs do this after seasons and is there anything I can do?

If anyone is eating they are trying to get up close and would steal from your hands if they could, you cant turn your back for 2 seconds if food is about as they will take it and even started to climb on to the dining table after we have had meals we always remove all plates etc but as soon as you go into another room one of them is looking for food on the table. Or trying to get stuff off the work top, they can not reach but we always try not to leave anything there. They are both eating like they have not been fed for days and this is not like them at all.

Any advice would be great, thank you

Have they been wormed recently? :-)

Some breeds are more of a scavenger than others, but all dogs will scavenge given the chance. Even if their worming is up to date it doesn't always clean them out properly. It could also be that the food you are giving them is not the right type for them. Are their coats nice and shiney? Or a bit dull? Can you feel the ribs? Or can you see them? You may need a trip to the vets to find out if there is something wrong with them.

Hi, thank you for your replys. Their worming is up to date. They both look nice and shiny, they are on the same food and same amounts which they have always been fed. Their ribs are nicely covered, you can feel them but you can not see them. it is so out of character that they seem so hungry.

We have never had problems with them trying to take food from people, or trying to reach up to the worktops to see what they can find.

Hi
I found my bitch is always extra hungry a few weeks after a season. Don't know why this might be, maybe a natural response as if they were pregnant they would be hungry all the time (perhaps the same response if just having a phantom?).

My daughter's bitch got into the bin whilst having a phantom & ended up at the vets as she'd ingested plastic as well! Thankfully no harm done, but it was totally out of character for her, she had recently finished a season.

So I'm guessing there's a link here.

Some dogs are like this all the time. I've had a few in my time, but if the behaviour is completely out of character, I would have them checked by the vet. I agree that bitches seem to eat more in the period after a season, but the sort of thing you describe is not that unusual, especially when you have more than one dog. There seems to be a lot of sibling rivalry involved - I'll eat it so she can't.
I think stealing is a training problem. Apart from that, once a gannet, always a gannet!

I agree with itsadogslife.  Sounds just like part of a phantom.
