Hi all,
I just wondered whether anyone could give me advice in regards to my 6 month old cavalier. As far as she's concerned pretty much everything is edible, particularly on walks.
We've done a lot of clicker training with her so she knows to leave things when theres a treat in it for her. She doesn't however listen when the treats are not available so she'll tuck into cigarette stubs, chewing gum, you name it!
Any ideas on this one?
Thanks!
You should always have your clicker with you , and treats in your pocket.Divert attention , maybe a favourite small toy only used on walks would divert attention . Lets hope she is not tucking into snails or slugs , with the recent warnings on lungworm, starting to edge up from the south west of the Uk ,to nearly all over the Uk .
you have to be carefull with chewing gum some of it has that xylotil (not sure how to spell it) but it can kill dogs,
have you tried her on a long line something like a washing line attach it to her collar and when she is doing something you do not want her to pick up the line and encourage her back to you that way you are still in control.
Can i ask is she due a season, as i had a bitch that a week before her season would eat anything and everything when out for a walk she had to have a muzzle on to stop her doing it.

I know a Dobe that gets walked with a basket muzzle on because the owners couldn't train the dog out of this problem. Might be worth trying just to break the habit? But you contiue with your leave training? Problem with this is, she will be getting her reward on her own so whatever you do, she doesn't care. You could maybe try doing a retrieve with high value treat? Instead of training her to leave, train her to bring whatever to you and swap for something great. Their is a great recipy on here for stinky liver cake that my dogs would do anything for! Start in the house and get your retrieve down pat(use the good treats here too so she knows what she gets for retrieving)and then take it into the garden where you put down things you want her to bring to you(again using high value treats) and just transfere it to the walk when you are sure she is going to bring it back. Do not chase her or make it into a game.
