Following on from my previous thread about previously using Advantix on my three Golden Retrievers, I now have the tricky task of trying to treat them for fleas (already itching and its only been 3 weeks since the application). I'm sitting here planning the attack, have the house spray already, can treat all the rooms & hot wash their bedding, but apart from starting to give the dogs some garlic i'm thinking about bathing them all in a good shampoo simultaneously with the big flea fight!

I don't think we've a big problem, but the cat always seemed to be picking them up, and now she's gone (had to be pts last week at 19 yrs old :(), I feel confident we can squash this issue once and for all!! I know when it's bad because the fleas like me particularly, and I start getting bitten which hasn't happened as yet this year.

So my big question today is, does anyone have any suggestions for a good quality, effective flea repellent shampoo (which may work well also to repel ticks)? i've heard good reports from Pennyroyal from Dorwest, but that's about it.

Would be happy to hear from anyone else's experiences.

I think the one I use is called something like JDS, I'm at work at the mo so can't go check, but it's a fairly strong smelling green thing, and seems to kill fleas on dogs pretty well. :-)

I use tea-tree oil to prevent fleas and ticks (but have no experience of using it when fleas are already present) - with my previous dog, bathed with shampoo containing tea-tree and 8-10 drops of the essential oil on his beds when they were re-made after being laundered.  He never picked up fleas, and I found only the occasional tick on him.  My present dog has garlic (Dorwest garlic & fenugreek tablets) with his food, in addition to the tea-tree regime of the previous one.

Neem shampoo from: www.neemgenie.co.uk the other neem products are also good for treating and protecting against fleas.

I read that a natural remedy for flea prevention (apart from garlic) is a weak solution of cider apple vinegar and water (teaspoon vinegar/cup water) and use this in a spray after shampooing and leave on the coat.

Yes Vetzyme JDS insecticidal.  It is the shampoo I use on my dogs as I do not routinely treat for fleas anymore (having never found the dogs to have any), just use the Household one.

It smells like the old/original Vosene.
