Topic Other Boards / Foo / Getting a urine sample from a cat! - help
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 04.04.12 07:37 UTC
We need to get a urine sample from our cat who has licked herself bald on lower part of her tummy and made it sore. She has been to the vet and been had further de flea treatment as the vet managed to find one (always gets done regularly but obviously not worked or left too late).
This hasn't worked and she still licking herself and making tummy sore, vet said could be stress or cystitis so now wants urine sample!
My daughter has shut her cat in her room for 36 hours with a litter box with just a few big ish pebbles in so the urine doesn't get soaked up BUT the cat just won't go, we have given in this morning and let her out as so worried she be in pain and was doing her nut to get out. She was out for 20 mins and then straight back in so probably did what she needed to do really quickly! Came in and licked her tummy loads.

Any ideas how to get this sample, she is a very clean cat and not used to a tray.

If shutting her in with non-absorbant litter (there's a product called Kat-kor which your vet should be able to get quickly for you) doesn't work then the vet should be able to get a sample with a catheter or a needle (under sedation) or even, as sometimes happen in the consulting room, when palpating a full bladder!

Goodness that must be a nightmare!! Cats are not particularly helpful in that respect!!!

"as sometimes happen in the consulting room, when palpating a full bladder!"

That happened with one of mine

Can you get some finer gravel from the builders merchants and wash it thouroughly and dry it and try that in the litter tray? May need something to dig in and large pebbles are not so good.Just a thought.

It is a shame that she is not used to a litter tray, because I have found that mine will 'go' in it even if there is no litter in it! I don't know about your cat but mine always "goes" in the cat carrier on the way to the vets. I have a plastic base in my cat carrier which I line with newspaper and put towels in to soak up what he does. I wonder if you could try something similar but without anything absorbent to soak up the urine. Long shot but might be worth a try :)

Thank you, am going to try some vermacite (sp) that you on plants. Will test it with water & if it doesnt soak up then will try that.
Vet not that helpful & suggested the 'calms' food for a few weeks and if still sore then she will take urine sample. I guess she thinking it stress related.
