Topic Dog Boards / Health / How much do you pay for wormers?

How much do you get charged for worming meds? Trying to work out if what we pay is the norm.
- By Nikita [gb] Date 26.03.12 20:27 UTC
I buy Cestem online (generic Drontal) - costs me about £20 to do 8 large dogs IIRC (I do it as needed so can't remember the price exactly).
- By JeanSW Date 26.03.12 21:33 UTC
I planned on buying Cestem, as I had an email with a great offer pricewise.  I took the offer to my own vet, and he checked out the ingredients in Drontal versus Cestem, and I was so glad that I hadn't ordered.  Naturally, I've completely forgotten what the Cestem didn't have enough of!!

As my vet would have charged me around £1.87 a tablet, and as I have a lot of dogs, I took the opportunity to buy in at Cruft's and got them for £1.24 each.  Huge saving when you need dozens of them!

Drontal versus Cestem

I thought that they were like for like?
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 27.03.12 09:10 UTC
I collect order for people at class and a few friends and get them a years worth at Crufts - usually have about +18 month use by -
I had a good check when Cestem came out a couple of years ago and the difference was 0.? % of 1 or 2 ingredients. Spoke to my Vet who said they would work fine.
This year I ONLY had to get 108 tablets.....has been up to over 300  but they worked out to 94p each.

Looking at the ingredients Cestem has only a 3rd of the quantity of Pyrantel - 50mg to Drontals 144mg for the normal tablet. Same quantities of 50 praziquantel and febantel in each.
- By suejaw Date 27.03.12 12:14 UTC
What does that ingredient do then, that's a huge difference as well in amounts!!
- By chaumsong Date 27.03.12 12:32 UTC
apparently it kills roundworm and hookworm, but I've no idea how much you need to do that :-D Can't imagine Drontal would have 3 times as much as necessary though? I reckon it's a bit like buying a computer - you may not know what all the things do exactly but more is definitely better :-)

We get our Drontal online from Vetmedic, works out at just over £1.50 each, we've always used Drontal for the adults and Panacur paste for tiny puppies. Tried Cestem last year, out of 9 dogs, 7 vomited an hour or so after, back to Drontal every time since, everyone fine.

Thanks chaumsong.  I knew someone would come up with content.  :-)

The vet actually got his bible out and checked for me when I had received an email with a fantastic offer price on cestem.  He told me that it would not do the job for roundworm and hookworm, as it wouldn't be strong enough.  I'm glad that I checked though, as I would prefer to stick with Drontal if that's the case.

Same as Henri, I use Drontal for adults and Panacur for pups.  Won't have milbemax in the house, as I have 3 collies as well as the naughty dogs.  :-)

Thats interesting to know about Cestem.  I have used it in the past thinking it was exactly the same as drontal....don't think I'll be doing that again!  Currently using milbemax and have no problems with that with my breed.
- By Nikita [gb] Date 28.03.12 08:07 UTC
That is interesting!  I've not had any problems with it, and any hints of worm problems have stopped after giving it but I will be a bit more wary now.

The main problem I had with it was getting it in them in the first place - very big tablets, and palatable my @rse!

Concerned when I read on earlier posts that Cestem was potentially less effective than Drontal.I had been led to believe that one clinically mimicked the other.Just spoke to a pharmacist at Vet Medic who stated they are both equally effective.I have used Cestem on the advice of another Champdogs member and find it cheaper and very good.My dogs wolf it down without a thought.

I wonder how they would know that for sure though?

edited to add that I've nothing at all against cestem but haven't actually used it myself after noticing the difference in active ingredient quantities. If someone knew of a trial or study that proved it was effective I'd happily use it, I love a bargain :-)

Hyperdrugs own http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Easimax-Plus-Dog-Wormer-Tablets-pack-of-8/productinfo/EASIMAX8/ is like for like ingredient wise, but not Cestem.

I use Panacur most of the year and just do the multiwormer in the summer.
- By chaumsong Date 28.03.12 11:51 UTC
Oh a little knowledge is indeed a dangerous thing :-)

It seems they are the same, Cestem lists 50mg pyrantel and Drontal 144mg pyrantel embonate - I assumed the two were the same thing and therefore Drontal was better...

However...

Easimax, huperdrugs own wormer, has the following ingredients

50mg Praziquantel
50mg Pyrantel (equivalent to 144mg Pyrantel Embonate)
150mg Febantel

Doh! I'll console myself by knowing that Jeans vet made the mistake as I did :-)
- By suejaw Date 28.03.12 13:24 UTC
It's Easimax that I've got :-)

Thanks for the info
