If you were viewing a puppy, would you expect to be shown the health certificates of parents? If the breeder said the parents had been health tested but didn't have any proof to show you, would you be suspiscious? Don't know if I'm being over the top on this and the dog ticks all the boxes except I need to know the breeder has done all that is possible, and without seeing anything, can't just believe a total stranger.

If I asked then yes I would expect to be able to see them. However, if you know the parents KC names then go on the KC site under Health Tester and key the names in and their test results should come up.
I always put copies of both parents test results in the puppy packs.

By the time people visit I have had pups registered and their parents test results are on the registration certificates which I show them.
If someone was interestyed in seeing what the certs themselves look like then I would show these, as well as those of an overseas stud, as KC doesn't put these on (except for DNA tests recognised by them).
I think it depends on the breed. The breed I am looking at I have never managed to find any health tests on the site you suggested, whereas with for example labradors, they always seem on there.
What health tests does this breed require ?
If the breeder says the sire/dam have been health tested then, yes, I would expect them to be able to back this up. It's not that difficult.
For my breed (well, for my dual registered lines) the KC database is total rubbish ... so depending on the breed depends on how good the database is. Personally, I wouldn't believe a thing the KC database told me about my dogs :-O But, to give them due credit, they do say they're 'not quite there yet'!!
If you ask to see the evidence of the health certificates, then I would expect them to be available, if not on the time of meeting, they should be able to be produced at a subsequent meeting. If the breeder has lost them then they really ought to get copies sent! However, I wouldn't necessarily expect to be shown certificates as a matter of course.

Barbara, can I just check - do you mean that the parents health test results are printed on the pup's KC registration cert ?
And can anyone do a link to show me what I would expect a KC registration certificate to look like, as I can't find one on the web site ?
Thanks in advance.
When I have puppy viewings I have leaflets of insurance and advice all certificates and paperwork on show and go through each piece with them. I am proud to show people these things and what i provide for them and their puppy. Also have breed book, and glossy dog mags for the past 5 years I've collected. You have to run it like a business when it comes to paperwork, organised and professional. Plus I'd forget something if i didn't have it filed and sorted into wallets.

My puppy advert stated that all new puppy would get their own copies of all the health test paperwork for both pups and parents. So, in their puppy pack was included photocopies of DNA tests/annual eye tests/hip scores/litter eye test/hearing test results for the whole litter and also for their own individual puppy.
The Active Register is pretty rubbish at updating dogs KC records with their health tests so would hate anyone to look and think they hadn't been done. It's the same with actually registering the litter. We can't do it online, has to be done the old-fashioned way of writing out every puppy reg application in long hand with pretty much the same details repeated all over again. Very tedious when you have a litter of eight!! You breed guys have it easy lol

Yes that is correct, any official KC/BVA etc testing scheme results re included against the parents names on registraion certs, also pups tests if relevant. For example most of my puppies will have in the DNA section by their names 'prcd-PRA hereditary clear' when both parents have been tested clear.

Yes I would be extremely suspicious, in my breed our parent club has a health scheme, when you pass each level you get a certificate, Bronze, Silver, Gold etc. When people phone me wanting advice on getting a puppy I always tell them to firstly read about the health scheme on the club's website and also tell them when they phone someone about a puppy to ask if the parents have been health tested under the club scheme and if they go to see a litter ask to see the certificates, if the people can't or won't show them the certificates to walk away. In our breed anyone can see the results for HC but not for heart testing, patella testing etc.
