My 4 year old has always had a good coat but last year and again this he has some thinning along his sides. He is fed a good quality food and the vets have done blood tests which showed no abnormality. Any thoughts?
is ther any recommended supplements which might help. I tried Yumega but made no difference.
Cheers
Is he on the chunky side? Sometimes this seems to happen with dogs that are carrying a few extra pounds, and this can go with thyroid issues but presumably that's part of what the vet tested for.

Seasonal alopecia perhaps? I used to know a boxer/ridgeback cross who lost a huge stripe of fur down each side every summer, his skin went black with uber tanning then it grew back over winter.

The vet said it was probably a seasonal thing :-(
Thyroid was normal.
If he is a single-coated breed then seasonal alopecia is a strong possibility. Dogs can lose fur in the winter months when there is not so much access to light- you could look at some kind of melatonin treatment- ask your vet.

Very interested in the responses to this - my 2 yr old greyhound has had thinning on her back legs and temples recently. We changed food and I don't think there has been any further thinning but we will need to give the food longer to see if it really is helping. She gets daily salmon oil and has done for yonks.

'Bald thigh syndrome' is common in greyhounds and some whippet lines. There is lots of debate as to whether its due to thyroid changes or stress and also some research that suggests it's dehydration as greys don't drink enough, try adding a tiny bit of milk or lactol to a bowl of water to encourage her to drink more :-)

Yes I know about that, but it's different in appearance. I've seen a lot of pet greys with it though - looks so cold! She also has it on her temples as well. Hopefully it will keep improving with new food :)
