Topic Dog Boards / Health / in season nightmare
- By metpol fan [gb] Date 18.01.03 14:31 UTC
I am having a nightmare, Buffy is in season and she is just at the right time to mate, and Callum is going absolutley mental, he just wont settle down, he is off his food, he kept us up all night as we had him in the bedroom with the door shut and he just paced round the bed all night screaming because he wanted to get to Buffy who was down staires in the kitchen, i phoned the vet to see if there was anything they could give him and they said no, just that we had to persevere or let someone else look after him until the season had finished, which is all well and good if you have someone that can do that, we went out to get some shopping today, and i locked him in the bedroom he dug up all the carpet from the door!! i went and bought some of that bitch spray to put on Buffy and got Callum some herbal stuff to try and calm him down, i just hope it works otherwise i might just kill him!!!!!

I think a spell in kennels for one or other might be slightly less drastic!:D Good luck:)

Sadly, all my friends with entire males and females say that this is par for the course! It'll be almost more than the poor lad can stand. Don't blame him, it's not his fault!

Probably the best thing to do is kennel one or other of them.
- By metpol fan [gb] Date 18.01.03 16:01 UTC
I have phoned a kennel to see if they can take Buffy, but she is unsure weather they can take her as there maybe no where to put her that is out the way of the other dogs, Callum can not go into kennels as he is not very friendly when faced with strangers and does not like other dogs in a kennel enviroment, all to do with his nervesness, fear aggression, and he is just plain weird really, but she is going to ring me back, thinking about ending Callums show career not that it was great and having them chopped off only concern is, how will it affect his nervesness will it make him more fearfull or not, loads to think about.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 18.01.03 16:34 UTC
Before you have Callum done, I'd try the injection first (Tardek? - someone will know) that mimics the effect castration would have on him. It takes a few weeks to "kick in" so it's too late for this season. It would show you whether or not it would enhance any fear aggression - he may need all the testosterone he can get to make him less fearful :). It would be terrible to "burn your bridges" and find that castration made him worse.
- By metpol fan [gb] Date 18.01.03 18:10 UTC
When i asked the vet about the tardac injection i was told that it would make no difference to him, because i was going to get it done for this season, i wish now i had just said to them do it, he is still pacing, he does not want to know about going out, food, its just a good time he has on his mind.

I use this injection on my male when I have bitches in season. I usually wait till the first week is over then I take him and get it. It doesn't stop him from wanting to do the buisness but more a case of out of sight is out of mind. Another tip I was given was to keep your bitch to just one room in your house and lay an old towel at the bottom of the door and use a spray with TCP or some other strong smelling antiseptic so when the dog has to pass ie going out for a walk of to relieve himself he only gets a whiff of that. I have found my dogs hate TCP. Also when my bitch comes into season for the first week I do tend to give the male extra food cause I just know he's going to go off it soon and if I thought for 1 minute I could be that skinny after a few days I too would starve myself !!!!!! I have alwasy found the injections to be a great help and do not interfere with the dogs fertility as they are only temporary and wear off after about 1 month.
Hope this has been of some help to you.

hi metpol,
if i remember your buffy is a cocker or american cocker, if you have a crate, you can crate buffy, callam can be near her, but will not be able to get to her, it's the keeping them apart that is driving him mad, if he can see her and be near her he may settle, if he has gone off his food, fryed sausages are good, so that he does not drop to much weight, good luck, regards tina
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 18.01.03 23:23 UTC
I would disagree entirely with Aoife :( Sorry!
If Buffy is crated, don't let Callum in the same room as her. They may still mate successfully through a crate. (I know that sheep can mate through a chainlink fence, so why not dogs?). The further apart (preferably in miles) you can keep them, the better. At least the most risky stage is the middle week, and then it eases off. But don't take chances.
- By aoife [gb] Date 21.01.03 22:13 UTC
do you keep both sexses, jeanjeanie, and have seen and had experience of two dogs mating through a crate to dissmiss my sugestion, i have had no accidents and have both sexses, i think metpol would have the commonsence probably to also cover the crate, regards tina
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.01.03 07:54 UTC
Yes, aoife, I do keep both sexes, and after the first season nightmare, both bitches (one too old, the other unsuitable for breeding) were spayed. I wasn't going through that again unneccessarily! :)

No, I haven't had experience of dogs mating through a crate, but my neighbour's sheep mated through a chainlink fence!! (witnessed!). As I know how determined both dogs and bitches can be when they have "the urge" I would be very loth to risk them in the same room. I wouldn't put it past them!!

Edit: Just my opinion. Better safe than sorry! Hope this helps! :)

Just to let you know i went with a rota system, Buffys cage is in the spare room, so she went in there with the door shut, and then i would swap them around every four hours, and Callum would have the run of the house when she was out the way, it worked very well, luckily she is now going out of season so not long now before everything is back to normal, but thanks for everyones suggestions
Diane
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.01.03 09:51 UTC
Glad you've managed to find a system that works for you :). All dogs, owners and situations are different, so there's no single correct solution! But there is always something that works!
- By aoife [gb] Date 22.01.03 21:47 UTC
hi metpol,
another suggestion is to use vicks vapour rub, it is very good for masking the scent, not to be put near her sensitive bits, around her flanks and surrounding area, although she is nearly out of her season they can still give off and be flirty with males well after the full season is over, might be cheaper than the spray stuff, not long now to normality for you all the best tina.
- By metpol fan [gb] Date 22.01.03 22:43 UTC
She is nearly over it as she has turned into Buffy the gsd slayer, a piranha she doesnt want to know him anymore and she is letting him know it........
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.01.03 16:06 UTC
It is the reason I only keep bitches, and the dog I own in partnership lives with someone who has kennel facilities.

In a normal house, without seperate areas with access to seperate areas of gardem, keeping bo5th sexes entire can be very trying, and what you describe is the norm. some people are fortunate to have males who don't go demented with an in season bith on the premises, but I think your boys reaction is the more usual.

my bitch is also in season, ive had to take her to my mums as i have 2 dogs. It was a nightmare when she was here, as the older dog would not leave her alone all his ears were pricked up all the time when he was round her.
But it is also hard as i miss her and 3 weeks is a long time not to have her here.

I have just been through the same hell on earth. I have three dogs who are experienced at stud but the whippet was the worst. I will definately have the Tardac injection done on him next time if I cannot find somewhere for the bitch to go. I eventually resorted to sedation for one day as the poor dog was dead on his feet as he had not slept or ate for three days. One of my other dogs did manage to climb the three foot mesh and squeeze through a 3 inch gap but I caught them just in time(I hope!!!!!!!!! Another trip to the vets at 28 days I think)
I wouldnt mind so much but the whippet is one of those reluctant studs who will reject bitches brought to him so it sticks in the throat a bit.
Thinking long term I have already started to sort out somewhere for the bitch to go next time although she may well be mated. As I am using my own dog on her we could be having this problem again.
This also coincided with a new job so thank god for wonderfull neighbours who are total saints!!

Instead of full castration, what about a vasectomy...contrary to what vets say, they can be done. He'll still get the urge but he will be sterile, so even with ties etc....no pups!!!

Mia is in season here but Curtis (Bless him) is till a tad too young to take it very seriously but they are left in separate rooms whilst I'm out. Being a dad by the time he's 11 months is not what I want especially to his sister!

i have 3 bitches,1stud dog,1 male intack,i donot have any problams, when the girls are in season, the boys are with the girls untill day 9 with a watcfull eyes then from day 9 to 19 they are sepatered, the boys are in the untily room in a double crate, the girl thats in season is in the dinning room in a crate when we are not there with two doors knocked,or the boys come to work with me,and stay in the car,the girls that are not in season stay with the boys,so they are the decory from the one thats in sesaon,
the boys doing not go off thier food or figth each,
i did find that when the bitch was away from the house and i visted the place where she was and that was at my mumms house, the boys would not settle beacuse i bought the smell back with me,so the girls stay when they are in season,it only 10 day from day 9 to 19 that i have to watch them, then from day 19 the girls will go back with the boys and if the boys try it on they tell them off,
so i know that i am very very luck with the pack of dogs that i got,

Hi Terri, pretty much the way I have mine. All out on our walk the last time the girls were in season on day 10 early morning, knew they were almost ready & got them all back & seperated. 3 entire males 1 neutered whos not backward in coming forward, no fights or going off food.

If I'd known earlier Diane - Buffy could have come here :) Holly is in season at the moment so one more wouldn't have made any difference.

As it's not very hot at the moment could you put Buffy in a crate and keep her in the car during the day? She'd be incrediably bored but at least Callum could relax.

Thanks Fiona for the offer, at the moment she is in her cage behind closed doors so he had a sleep last night and so did we, thank god, but he is now on guard duty at the door poor boy!!!

Hi Diane, don`t know if this will help but when my male got to the age where he knew what to do & she came in season (the middle) I was miles away in a hotel with them. He was only 8mths & didn`t think he would be bothered! I had her in the cage & him loose, a friend been in the breed a long time told me cage him & leave her out so I changed them around. It turned out a lot easier as she stayed by us & he fell asleep! :) It might work with your 2.

He has settled a bit more today, his cage is in the loft but i think it might be a tad small for him now, but thanks for the advice, i have sprayed bitch spray at the bottom of the door and he seems better, not winging anymore anyway.

Oh boy, do you have my sympathies. I have two young bitches and one male. Every one told me what a nightmare season time would be and I did not think it would be THAT BAD !! Both my bitches came into their last season within two weeks of each other and my partner and I are still trying to catch up on our lost sleep and dying the grey hairs back to their original colour. Can you let me know what you di d in the end as no matter what we do not much stops an 18 and a half stone male who wants to get to a bitch in season !!
