I think my dog needs a hormone boost he has to date been presented with 3stunning bitches and couldn't even muster a sniff any tips as time is ticking yet again.

the girls might not be ready yet and he knows not to wates his time!!
or he could have an infection??

we have had a girl come visit our boy hes so up for it but not doing what he would when the girl is ready..hes only 3 and only mated 3 girls

If a bitch comes to my boy and she's not ready, he will sniff and then sit down behind her as if to say 'not wasting my time here'

We tried twice before even to the point of, actually you don't want to know about that, he is in tip top condition and last year i had him at the vets for a check up of his tackle he has no problem. Performing on his own for lengthy periods IS NO BOTHER put him with a bitch and he don't care so he has never had the oomph to do it , i think he lost his mojo. I have heard of an injection to boost the hormone levels on his part.

Could be timing. There are so many opinions on timing and every dog is different the bitches are climbing the walls and him for his services and he doesn't care.

Does he live with the girls that you are hoping to use him on??
- By pikles [gb] Date 27.03.12 18:00 UTC
No he does not live with the girls, although  i do have three other girls at home and another male whom is too old to be bothered about much,

I don't know why you are thinking that your dog needs a hormone boost.  Certainly, not all males are raring to go.  And, to be honest, if a male really needed that, you wouldn't want to use him at stud.

Has he been used before ?  The first time a male is used, he is usually better off having an experienced bitch that knows her way round the block.

Are you accustomed to handling stud dogs, and recognising when a bitch is ovulating?  Some of us that have handled males for years, can almost spot a ripe bitch as good as a blood test!

Just because a bitch is flagging doesn't mean that she is "up for it."  I have bitches that are total trollops, but my boys won't give them the time of day if they're not ready.  They won't waste their energy.

I had a male dog whom everyone wanted to use at stud.  He had bitches come to him like the owner of some Harem!  But to no avail.  These bitches were fertile and ovulating but he just didn't care.  Funny thing was, my friend had a different breed(and I mean different in every way) and her bitch who he had been brought up with was the only bitch he ever 'fancied'.  She was tough as old boots and never gave him a minute! And he loved it.  So, when he was 7 yrs old, we brought a bitch to him but I asked the owners to leave her a couple of days early.  She came to us and for those 2 days, the bitch gave him evils and grumbled if he came near.  He loved it! And by the time she was ready he was raring to go.  We managed to mate him and bred a litter!  And after 5yrs of waiting, I was so dissappointed :(  Seems he knew best, so he was never used again.

It is not just our own species that have in its population those who and not interested in the opposite sex and it is something they are born with - there is not much you can do about it.

Giving a dog medication without knowing what the problem is can't be acceptable and even if you could find a vet to oblige I would not do it.

If he has been used before then I would question if he was well or if the bitch is ready.

I think this is whats happening miss timing with the girls owners, i know when my bitches are ready to be honest i never checked other peoples girls but i will now god it couldn't be as simple as that i did say come back Friday so i will look for myself another senior moment on my part they used to be blonde moments, thank you.

> i never checked other peoples girls

I have always considered it my responsibility as the owner of the stud dog.  And some bitch owners believe the old wives tale about waiting for "straw coloured discharge" so I prefer to check rather than waste my boys time.

My boy and the young lady in question have been together all weekend to no avail, she was ready Friday and i have tried it all to get them to tie I AM EXHAUSTED i have had my suspicions that my boy was not up for the task this proves it i am very disappointed , probably not as much as the other owners are going to be. Such is life.

> she was ready Friday

How do you know she was ready Friday?  did she have a progesterone test to show she had ovulated and Friday was around two days since ovulation?  If not then you do not know she was ready no matter her behaviour if the dog is not interested it may still be she is not ready.

I just tried mating one of my bitches and as she had been mated days 14, 16 and 18 when I took her to USA, and produced a litter 65 days after the first mating (this would mean she actually was mated on or just before ovulating), I tried this time on days 15 - 18 and the dog said no.

Unfortunately his owner was unavailable on the following few days (whelping her own bitch and unable to leave pups) so we don't know if she may have been even later this time, or perhaps even had ovulated early on and gone over before we started (though behaviour wise I think it was more the case of she wasn't quite ready enough for him).

I also had a bitch visit a stud dog I was handling for a Friend.  She had been tried with another stud on two or three occasions and never got a mating despite showing willing.  They did do one blood test but with a weekend intervening between results shoeing no yet, they simply brought her up.

The bitch was very willing but the dog was only half hearted testing the water and would not mate her.  she was also very small,a nd a vet examining her didn't think a mating would be possible.  So this was the news we were going to pass the owner that she was just not mateable.

Next morning he mated her and for three days after, result a litter of 6.

She had been flagging from day 11 Aden finally was mated on days 16 to 19!  He knew, she was simply a tart.

Of course you could have the rare male that just doesn't make a stud dog.
