Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Terrier nipping Update

Hi, I email a couple of months ago for advice as the rescue terrier cross I had just rehomed was nipping through fear of people approaching. Thanks to the advice received I have spent lots of time helping her gain her confidence around strangers.
We started by always moving out of the way when people approached whilst out and the closer the person got the faster I fed her and soon she realised people coming near were a source of treats.
Next I started taking her to places where I could trust people to be gentle with her, my local pet shop and vets etc. I asked these people to throw a treat for her first and then to carry on treating her if she approached of her own accord. This went so well I started asking passing dogwalkers to stop and give her treats (explaining she was nervous and to be gentle with her) and again great success.
We progressed to standing outside Tescos and feeding while people walked past with bags and trolleys, I started by distracting her as they moved close but then progressed to getting her to look at the person and then look to me for a treat. She now has learnt to scan for people as it means food. Some dogs are just too smart for their own good !
This weekend I took her to a agricultural show with hundreds of people, pushchairs and livestock and she was a star. Confidently strutting around with her tail wagging. Tomorrow we start our first group obedience lesson and I feel confident she is now ready to cope with life a lot more.
Thanks to all for listening when I felt overwhelmed when her problems first arose, I now have a confident cheeky little madam.

Brilliant, just reading that brought a tear to my eye. Just shows what a bit of time & patience can do. Very well done to you for putting in the hard work, and a big hug to your girly.

Well done. It is always great when people come back and show how training has worked.
