My 2yr old BT had abdominal pain this morning ie stetching her back legs out & lifting her head back. She refused her breakfast (small amount Chappie) at first. Went into garden for wee & poo (normal), then eat food. Looked very sorry for herself, went out again, poo'd again this time passed blood & mucous, then brought breakfast up.
She's usually very active, a happy little dog but she is apt to eat all sorts of things when out for a walk.
Of to vet, her temp normal, abdo very tense. So could be something she's eaten. Given anti sick and morphine based pain relief which vet said would last 8hrs. Well its 9hrs now and she's still groggy. Does anyone have experience of their dogs having this type of pain killer?. She has had very tiny bit of boiled fish and kept it down. She's to start Metronidazole this evening.
I'm just so worried.

Hi,

One of my gang had a morphine based painkiller about 5 months ago for abdominal pain and was VERY groggy. He was right off his legs and was so bad that I called the vet out twice, out of hours. He wasn't himself for about 24 hours after the drug. It has been marked on his records not to give morphine based drugs in future.

Hope she is better soon :-)

Morphine can make you very sleepy and disorientated and also sick but it does help with the pain. However if your dog is restless and not relaxed then I would call the vet and ask for advice. It is good if she is keeping food down no matter how small an amount.

Sorry I cannot help re the pain killer but would like to add that my GSD was on Metronidazole virtually all her life due to inflamm. bowel disease and it really worked wonders for her. Before starting she couldn't keep any food down at all and had the runs all the time, but the Metronidazole cured all of that.
I wish her well soon

Thanks for the replies.
Molly was still very spaced this morning. Rang vet and was told all dogs react differently and not to worry. Sure enough this evening she's more or less back to normal thank goodness. It was the vet telling me yesterday the drug would last up to 8hrs that got me worried.
Anyway she's eaten fish and rice, and scrambled egg which she kept down. I hope it doesn't happen again, she did this once before.
