Our 6 month old intact male puppy was seen mating with his grandmother in the back garden. No tie seen but the bitch is in season. I know that we let our guard slip as we have also been going through a lot of emotional upheaval with the very sad death of my wife. Is it worth paying the vet £80 to prevent an unwanted pregnancy as the chance of a pregnancy is small?

Firstly sorry to hear the sad news about the loss of your wife.

Yes I would get her to the vet as it is better to be safe than sorry as an unwanted litter of puppies as such an emotional time would be the last thing you want to be coping with

I would take her to the Vet for the injection, we've had lots of (planned) litters over the years without a tie.  Better to be safe.

Make sure it is Alizin they use, and be aware it is most effective if given at the end of the season (day 21 and then a second one I think a day or so later).

Being as the pregnancy is unwanted I'd say Murphy's law will come into play and so make the pregnancy a certainty!

An additional thought - am I right in thinking that the KC won't register a litter with such close breeding?

I agree re. Alizin - it's the drug least likely to give the bitch a pyometra, though you are warned that this may still happen... and also worth mentioning is that the bitch then comes back into season and has to be guarded for a further 3wks! grr.  I think it can be done within (by injection) 2 days? of the mismating, and then has to be repeated exactly 24hrs later.

Large and annoying a cost as it is, £80 will at least give you peace of mind that you won't have pups when you least want them.

Youve already had advise id happily agree with, these things happen to the best of us without the trauma your dealing with right now....i just wanted to say im sorry for your sad loss.my thoughts are with you and your family..

Someoen I know has recently ahd to ahve Alizin for theri bitch and it does nto brign teh bitch back in season, btu next season may be sooner than otehrwise expected.

It is the old jabs (Delvesteron) that brought the bitch back in.

Grandmother to Grandson would be registered and with no other common relatives would give a COI the same as half sibling mating of 12.5%

I wouldn't take the risk.  The last thing you need is a litter to rear anyway!  I had a mismate with a bitch that I didn't want to breed from.  Two days after she was given Alizin, and 2 days after that, a second jab.  I asked the vet for her experience of the jab, and she said that she had never seen any problems with bitches done so soon after mating.  She was right.  The season was not in any way prolonged, and she was spayed 3 months later.

While I don't want another accident, it is something I would definitely recommend to anyone having the same problem.  I certainly have no regrets.  :-)

I don't use a particularly cheap vet practice, but for some reason I thought I paid around £27 for each jab, but don't want to swear to it.

I  had one of my girls injected with Alizin last month.It was vital to be given exactly 24hrs after and as my bitch was 55kg it cost £163.I even rang 2 other practises and they were a few pounds more.My girl was fine and I am not sure if my male had his wicked way,but my daughter my have accidently let them loose for a few mins in the garden not realising she was in season.

I don't see why; the datasheet says it's best done at the end of the season.

ETA: Or do you mean that the second injection has to be 24 hours after the first, not that the first needs to be given 24 hours after the mating? That would make sense.

The second injection had to be given exactly 24 hours after - the vet was very adamant that this was so and warned me not to be late the following day(though I am sure an hour wouldn't have made any difference but for once i was punctual.
Alizin can be given up to 45 days after an accidental mating.

Yes, I appreciate that.  It's just that from my point of view, I would (emotionally) handle an early jab far better than the thought of terminating something that actually looked liked puppies.  So it's very much a personal thing for me. 

I agree with you whole heartedly.The sooner the jab the better,again my personnal view as it gives less chance for all the pregnancy hormones to kick in and must cause less psychological and emotional damage as well.Jude

Any embryos don't implant until 21 days post-mating, so before then won't affect the bitch at all (other than the discomfort of the injections).

I think it would be best to scan a bitch at say 35 days after the mating to make sure the Alizin had worked and if not there is still time to use again to terminate the pregnancy.

Unpleasant to have to do this late, but at least a possibility.

Has anyone who has used this ever had any side affects? eg allergic reaction or discomfort when the injection is given (more so than normal boosters)

Judging by the experiences of the few bitches we've treated at work, the injections are quite painful. However they're not as bad as an unwanted litter!

I think one bitch had a lump which persisted for some time - if I can remember her name I'll check this afternoon.

Mine was fine,but because of the volume it was injected in 3 sites,poor love :(
