Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Best in (what's left in) show!!!

Would you want your money back? Because whatever is awarded Best in show tonight isn't necessarily best in show. Several excellent dogs have been removed by very questionable vet inspections and therefore people who have paid to see 'Best in show' are being conned!!!!

Personally I'm happier watching it knowing that some of the dogs with unpleasant (to them) and sometimes painful conditions are not taking part :-)

dogs not fit for function have been removed, how can they be among the best examples in the dog world ?

Agree with Chaumsong and Cooper.

agree just wish whole line up had been checked.
prefrebly by 3 vets per dog to cut risk of mistakes/arguments

I'd feel rather conned and cheated if a group winner or even BIS had won when clearly it had health problems or surgery to correct such problems!! I dont mind being beaten a truely better dog, but saying a dog with health problems is better no way, how can it be?!

I ditto the above comments!

Not fit for function??????? Why does a previously operated on dog (to rectify a problem) make it not fit for purpose? The 'purpose' of a dog is to be a pet, therefore an operation would be in the best interests of the dog NOT the show ring!!!! But then because you have done the best for your dog, they then get their BOB win taken away....so where's the fairness in that???

they knew the dogs were to be vet tested before they went to the venue, the rules are the rules. the only unfairness i see is that all breeds were not inspected.

If you read yhe declaration you sign each time you enter a show you agree that your dog hasn't had surgery which alters yhe confirmation of yhe dog. So for instance surgery to correct an eyelid problem is then doing such that. The kc won't ever give a dog permission to show for this operation! Not saying dont have yhe surgery, quite yhe opposite but if you still show then on your head be it!

Operations to correct problems benefit the individual dog, but they don't benefit the BREED.   Any progeny of that dog would possibly still be affected by the problem if it is one that can be 'passed on'.

The whole point of showing and judging dogs is to be able to assess their fitness for the job they were bred to do and for breeding.

For example, a dog requiring an operation for entropion (eyelashes that  grow in towards the eyeball, either in the wrong place or at the wrong angle and cause the eye to become sore) would be in the interests of the dog in question, but would disqualify the dog for showing and breeding because it is a condition that, uncorrected, would affect the working ability of the dog and is likely to be passed on to affect pups.

Any operation to correct conformation excludes a dog from being shown for the same reason.   It's to protect the breed as a whole, other breeders and puppy buyers.

As a pet owner, would YOU want to buy a pup from show winning parents, who had a high chance of developing a problem that would be painful simply because you weren't aware that the parents had the problem?   after all, if they had loads of wins and CCs you'd expect them to be fully healthy ;)

Can't comment on whether the withheld BOBs were fair or not as only the vet really knows why he/she failed the dogs
