Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Achieveing a Tie
- By NatalieH [gb] Date 08.03.12 10:09 UTC
Hi Everyone , I have been in my breed for 4 years , and had good success at shows , i was approached by a another show bitch owner , in regards to mating our 2 dogs.
I have agreed to this as both dogs have qualities that are correct as the standard. I feel i have tried to do everything correctly , i have checked and re-checked all kc documents and health certificates , i have done the kc mate select, i have prepared my dog as in clipping way excess hair , and i have throughly cleaned him to prevent infection.
Both dogs are upto date on all injections , and have been fleed , wormed and so on.
So the day arrived yesterday , for her to come to my house , and both dogs are first timers , my lad is 2 and the bitch is 3.
When she arrived i asked they keep her on leed until i felt they were okay with eachother, which i thought they would be as they have met numerous times ,but with her being in seaon i wanted to make sure my boy would not get hurt.
They were fine together so we let her off her lead , and they ran about playing and both very interested , she was standing for my lad , and when he went to mount her and i steped forward to help him along ,he would move away.
I was talking to him telling him he was gd boy , and encouraging him , but he was more interested in playing around.
I therefore took the decision to seperate them for him to calm down a little, so brought the girl inside.
It started raining so i brought the rug out of front room in , into kitchen and brought them both in , then again he mounted her and i this time guided him in , but the bitch owner who had hold of his bitch let her go as she bolted and squelled, my lad was then in motion and therefore completed his job without achieveing a tie.My husband then came home and i suggested to the bitch owner that they leave her and me and my husband with try again.
After about 7 hours rest and plenty more playing, my lad was ready to attempt again, me and my husband was sitting on our bench and they both tied on thier own but it lasted for only around 6 mins , then about 15 mins later they done it again at this lasted around 8-10 mins.
After this both dogs looked tired so we ended up all going in house and they both fell asleep on the rug watching tv.
The bitch is due to return friday , and i have asked that they simply just drop her off this time.rather than staying as both dogs seems to think it was all about play with both sets of owners in garden with them.
Is there anything i could do , to achieve a longer tie ? I have spoken to friends who are breeders and none of them are able to come to help , so i am on my own well with just the husband.

Thanks
Natalie

I wouldn't be worrying over a 10 minute tie. I've had plenty of those. I've also had less and also had more (30 minutes in the rain. It always rains with long ones :)) !0 minutes and I think phew, that was a nice short one, all done and dusted before cramp sets in lol. Really wouldn't be worrying, the business is still being done.

Nothing to add to what has already been said to you, they tied for long enough, definitely :-). But I amazed that they mated again and tied again so soon after the first time. Is this normal ? Whenever, I have taken a bitch to be mated the opportunity for a second mating has never been given, well, not on the same day anyway. I have always assumed that once a dog has delivered the goods, that is him all done for a few hours at least.

thanks , i just feel like i am missing something with this being my first time 2 lol , and dont want to get anything wrong.

the bitch came at around 10am and the first instance happened about half 12 ( which is when the bitch bolted away and owner let go), then nothing again till around half 5, ( without sounding too crude , he was on and it was in and they were stood together , then he got off and then again he got on and the same for around the 10 mins) do you think then that they may not have tied ? x
- By cavlover Date 08.03.12 12:13 UTC
I don't know for sure, but if they were stood together and unable to separate then yes they were tied :-)

Did they tie and him turn so they were bum to bum?

Do I have it right that you are leaving them loose? In my opinion both dog and bitch should be securely held on collars and leads throughout the mating process.  This is even more important with 2 novices who could easily panic.

The bitch owner needs to hold their bitch securely and as the stud dog owner, you need to have your hands underneath so that you can feel what's going on and to stop the bitch trying to sit down! :)

I didn't realise they could tie again so soon either, but it does sound like, assuming at least one of those was a tie, that you have had a proper mating, 10 minutes is plenty long enough. Anything more than 20 minutes and I start thinking the bitch must have gone over. You do need to make sure that he is in properly and tied, rather than just (if you'll excuse me) doing it in the wrong place through over enthusiasm! Also well done for getting your husband to help lol, mine always used to hide upstairs when I was doing a mating!!

Hi Sharon , I was told not to let him go back to back on his first try , to just slowly lift his front legs over to the side onto the floor.
- By NatalieH [gb] Date 08.03.12 13:52 UTC
hi, gwen they both had collars on but were not on a lead, do u think i should leave leads on the next time ? x
- By NatalieH [gb] Date 08.03.12 13:55 UTC
Hi Westcoast, the bitch owner panicked an let go off her , so i then sat on floor and put my knee under her and then with one arm under her lifted her up and the other arm around my boys behind , while my husband held her collar at her front. sounds quite complicated now that i have written it down ! lol :) x

Hi Lucydogs , yes he was a bit reluctant to help ! but he did in the end after i threatened not to cook his tea hahaha for tomorrow i have managed to get hold of another breeder friend who has successfully mated her 2 bitches in the past to come to my house and assit me. She said it sounded like they did tie but i would liker her to come just for reasurance for me lol x

Long ties are nothing but a pain in the bumb for the owners, and the dogs can find it tiresome.  They are not really needed.

Anything over a minute tie means that what was needed will have been depostied.

The only reason we are happiest with a tie is that way we know the deposti ahs been made for sure, a pregnancy can result withotu oen,b tu you can't know if the dog ejacualted or not withotu the tie.

Your boy must have been very keen to mate the bitch 3 times in such a short space.

so i then sat on floor and put my knee under her and then with one arm under her lifted her up and the other arm around my boys behind ,
That's where you should be all the time, with one hand underneath 'feeling' what's going on and the other arm around his behind to hold him there in case the bitch is a bit slow to hold on to him. :)

yes this is the reason thats making me doubt that it may not have been a proper tie, am glad i have a breeder friend coming tomorrow that way she will be able to confirm to me yes it was definate as she will be here with me.

I have certainly had matings twice on the same day, and also the male I used for the my first litter while being used one time had just come away from the tie and while the owners were congratualating themselves on a job well done (it was in the kichen) he turned and had her again!!!

So it is quite possible for a dog to mate a bitch twice in quick succession.

well the last 2 were quick behind eachother but the first one was early on about half 12ish when she pulled away an owner let go , so i dont think you could count tha as anything really , then nothing apart from more flirting and playing until about half 4.
To be honest i am sure my lad thought it was a play date lol he was dead excited that sumone had come to visit for him to play around with,i was on phone to my breeder friend when they had gone , and she said he was romancing her ! before they got down to business lol

It's the sperm quantity after losing his load without entering first time, I know my boy doesn't even give the girls the time of day afterwords as he knows the job is done, doesn't waste his energy.

My very experienced boy stands side by side with his girls from choice.

Some of the studs in my breed turn quick as a flash.

My boy's the same, usually just lies down and completely ignores them afterwards  - such a gentleman!.....NOT!....lol.

I have just had my bitch confirmed in whelp from a 10 min tie. I think it was long enough.
- By NatalieH [gb] Date 09.03.12 17:21 UTC
aww thats gd , ive had her here again today , and not much has happened been out with them since 11 this morning with my breeder friend and a couple of attempts to mount by my boy but just not excited enough ! to put it plainly ,and the bitch has gone down considerably but was still standing for my lad, my friend thinks her scent is going so thats why he wasnt getting as excited as he did the first time.

Just cross our fingers and hope she has pups , the bitches owner who shows wants to keep one back for herself to show , so if no pups i will feel awful :( x
