Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / when will she stop mounting???
- By Em [gb] Date 17.01.03 22:00 UTC
hi, our 6mth old Bichon Frise female puppy keeps mounting my mum and dads female westie. Also, if anyone is standing still she will mount their leg. This can be so embarassing especially when she does it to my 8yr old son and he asks what she is doing. When we get her done will this stop?? My mum and dads westie is just over a year old and she has never done this.
TIA for your advice

How is it embarrassing, mounting is not sexual its a dominance trait, the dog is showing the person who is boss albeit in a peculiar way. Max is neutered and at 2 he still mounts my leg to try and climb the pack ladder. We all love a trier

No geting her done will not stop her, Candy is 6 and she used to do it to buds head. Dont think they stop all together but she will calm down soon, one of my pups is always doing it, they just push her down.

Barney kept (and now and again still does) do this. Just tell her no and dont let him. If we play at his level on the floor now and again he tries it on and we say no, push him off and get up and stop playing. After a while we play again and he is okay. Have to let him know who is boss. He should stop in the end. Other posters who are more experienced may help you more but this has helped for us. I do believe it is only dominance - at his level he wants to be boss - so dont let her :)

All my dogs do this to each other, all are fixed except one. I just tell them no, and if they don't stop out comes the spray bottle. Then they stop. They don't do it as much now, but when they start getting excited and chasing eachother lots then they will do it more often. Just nip it in the but now. I found the spray bottle works because they never see me spray them so they think every time they do that they get wet, and they don't like that too much.
ttfn :)

I agree it is a dominance thing! Our last dog was castrated - his bed used to be in the kitchen, so that was obviously 'his area', and if the cat dared to step foot in there he would mount her (ridiculous I know!), but he was simply saying 'this is my space and I'm the boss in here'. He never did it anywhere else, and didn't do it to people. Tell your dog 'no', she must learn she is not the dominant one, esp not over your 8 year old.
