I received my bitches hip score back yesturday and after being told she would be around 12{the lady has always been very good in her guess before} in total she came back at 22 {12:10}.
I got the plates back too and after much looking at her mums who is 17 in total I honestly think they are much better than her mums.
So my question is can I appeal.
What happened? they were scored on the 3rd of jan so was the panel peeved off with having to back to work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great I will apeal.
The breakdown of her score is norberg angle R 1 L1
subluxation R 3 L3
cranial acetabular edge R3 L3
dorsal acentabular edge R2 L1
cranial effective acetabular rim R 2 L2
caudal acetabular edge R 1 L0
not that I know what any of these mean.
thanks emma xxx
Hi Emma, yes you can. Talk to your vet & the BVA about it.

The appeals procedure is that you must appeal within 45 days from the date of dispatch of the original results from the BVA in writing. THE SAME plate, the one stamped once with the initals BVA must be resubmitted by the vet within "A Reasonable Period Of Time" (BVA's words) An Appeal certificate, available to the vet will be issued by the BVA and must be completed in the same way as an HD certificate and must be submitted with the plate and the appeal fee. (Proof of posting will NOT be accepted as proof of reciept by the BVA!!!)
The plate will be re-scored by the Chief Scrutineer who's decision is final.

Thats the score you get! unfortunatly you cannot pick the best.
Your main problem is Subluxation. In your case, very simply, the socket which the femoral head fits into covers less than half but more than a quarter of the head. And the Cranial Acetabula edge, The top edge of the socket runs upward slightly away from the femoral head

Yes I can see that I have plates with a dog scoring 3 whose sockets are really deep and plates of a dog with a score of 50 plus who has very very shallow sockets.
Is it worth me apealing then????

I'm betting the scores won't differ much. It's not often they get it much out. Because you have lost some on every point it is not as bad as if you had lost the same score on fewer features

If off track a bit, but I do wish vets would not offer an opinion of the state of dogs hips. It can, as in this case, be upseting, I have know people not send the plates in because of the vets opinion or worse if the vet says they are good having looked at a x-ray taken for some other purpose or just from handleing the dog and the owner then does not bother to have them scored and goes ahead and breeds on the vets opinion. It should not happen and would not if the vets could just keep their mouths shut when it comes to hip scores. Jackie
