Topic Dog Boards / General / 'original' vetbed
- By CVL Date 02.03.12 12:05 UTC
Inspired by the Crufts shopping post, I started writing a shopping list!  The main thing I am after is more vetbed as I've now started using it as a door mat.  About 8 years ago I bought some which seems better quality than others I've bought since.  Last year it seemed everyone was claiming to have the 'original' vetbed.  But who did make it first?  Which is best?

Also, some non-slip stuff would be great, but the only piece like this I've got was extremely cheap and doesn't really wick the moisture away like the 'real' stuff and doesn't dry as quickly after washing either.  So any suggestions are welcome :-)

Thanks,

Clare

The original Vetbed was marked on the back and I think that is the only one that can use the name actually on the goods

The original is made by Petlife, they are based in Bury St Edmunds, Hall 4 stand 34

Not able to edit my original post sorry.

Have looked on line and can't find any that is marked on the back so do wonder if it is no longer made by those who invented it. It did have a green back and when newish was difficult to wash because it was very stiff and resisted being bent.

Oh, right, will go and look at their site and see if it is as I remember it.

EDIT had a look and the original white roll is marked as I remember it so it would seem these are the people who produce or have produced the pucker stuff.

Thank you both.  The fake stuff just doesn't compare to these original pieces I have.  I will put them on my Crufts list!

Such a good idea to use vet bed as a door mat -but I can't do it because whatever I put on the floor, be it rugs or blankets or vetbeds or anything, the little dogs think it's there for them to pee on! I have never understood why, especially as I do NOT use newspaper to housetrain, but it's always been like this. Anyway what I was really going to say was there is one kind of fake vetbed that has rubber backing and that stays put a lot easier, maybe that is an idea for floors?

I'm soooo glad my dogs haven't decided to pee on it Marianne, as it's the best thing I've found to get mud/dirt off their paws from the garden (obviously it doesn't get it all, but if they happen to run through the rest of the house before I can wipe their feet, it isn't a complete disaster - I say disaster because I've only just moved, and the house proud-ness hasn't worn off yet... give it another month or so :-D).  I think rubber backed stuff would be best too, but my only experience of this has been a really really poor quality imitation that takes an age to dry.  Do you know who makes the rubber backed stuff you've used?  I see the 'original' people do a non-slip variety too, so that's one I'll have a feel of as well!

I don't know who the makers are unfortunately, just got a few offcuts I am using for kittens and touchwood, have used them for a few years now and am pleased with them.

Clare,

I order the kennel packs from  http://beddingbox.com/   they are normally at shows, always the non slip stuff, which I don't think is all that non slip, but it does last and last until a dog decides to chew!!

My sisters dogs all ways did this and she decided it was because she used it in the whelping box, stopped and used just paper and the peeing stopped in those adults. Don't know if you use it in the puppies box but if you do try something else.

The trouble I have with Vetbed the dogs like to move it around and pull it up into a spike and then chew the spike off - guess it is similar to the mutual ear chewing that goes on. I use the Walkoff mats in the doors and anywhere the dogs may slip in wet weather.

I got a really good deal off ebay.
It was a pack of 5 pieces, each 1m x 1.5m. But assorted qualities.
1 really good non-slip piece which is fantastic. 2x very thick grey pieces that are good, a similar dark blue piece and then 1 black piece which is flimsier and floppier - the puppies tend to wrestle with this one and throw it about, so not as successful.
£37.50 + £10 postage which I thought was a really good price.

This is a link to their shop, I haven't looked, but assume they can provide most kinds since what I bought was a job lot of off-cuts.

The best vet bed has a green back and like Nova says it is quite stiff and difficult to bend at first. If  you  find you can fold it in half when new then it is the cheap stuff and won't last long.

Think this is one of the times that you really do get what you pay for, I have some of the original stuff that I bought in 1990 (my sister and I shared a whole roll) which is still going strong when loads of "bargains" bought in-between have long since bitten the dust or been torn to pieces.
