Topic Dog Boards / General / How much to pay dog sitter?

I have someone who i know coming to look after my animals and house for a week, she will still be working at her own job, which is a few hours a day.
I am wondering what the going rate is? I will leave her food and some money to buy groceries, but not sure how much to pay, she said oh whatever you think!

We paid our dog sitter £35 per day which included staying overnight but going out to do some other jobs of her own during the day. I would much rather she hadn't had to go out but as I have 10 dogs couldn't dictate too much.

I think the trainer at my club who does it was going to charge £5 per dog per day, it's still cheaper to go back to my old area to leave them with friends!

I paid over £350 for 2 nights house sitting while we attended a family wedding a couple of years ago. We used an agency with a flashy web site and the service appeared to be good value for money. We had 10 dogs at the time .
Huh, by the time we'd paid the travel expenses for the initial visit by the sitter ,who lived 300 miles round trip away, plus her expenses for the house sit and other extras we felt pretty annoyed. Furthermore, the lady who 'sat' was sent to us because of her physical fitness . I was assured that she would enjoy the challenge of keeping my dogs exercised and happy. On our return it was clear that she had spent more time indulging her fitness regime by running dogless along the local track than caring for my guys. The house was filthy. She mopped the floor where one of the dogs had weed and left the mop soaked in urine. It was clear that my dogs had not been able to get out to toilet as necessary. Also, in spite of strict instructions to the contrary, she allowed the two girls who hate each other to get together for a show down and both had poorly paws to wave at me when we got back.
Never again ! I am fortunate in having an adult son who helps me with the dogs and hopefully we will not have to use an agency again.

My friend next door used to sit for me but to be honest the girlies are getting too much for her now as she is not as fit as she used to be so I have found a great sitter who  lives locally. She charges  £20 per night for overnight care (24 hours) including 2 dogs and £9.00 per extra dog. This includes 2 walks a day so in theory for my 3 thats £29 per day. and she is hear most of the time. 20 out of 24 hours. For overnight care at her home it is £12 per night for up to 2 dogs and £6 per extra dog. including 2 walks. Day care 8am - 8pm at her home is £10 and £5 for extra dogs (Over 2). This includes 2 walks.
Day care at your home is £15 per day (2 dogs) £7.50 per extra dog and includes 2 walks.
A 30 min walk for up to 2 dogs is £5 and a 1 hour walk is £9.
She is insured and never has more than 3 dogs in her home (One is hers) she interviews all dogs and will not accept any who cannot get on with other dogs to stay in her home. She will still do house sitting for them and walks but not in company.
She is proving to be as good as I hoped and in fact is coming to Crufts with me as we have become very friendly and enjoy one anothers company.
I have been very lucky with her.
Aileen

PS She is insured

We are very fortunate, a lady who has become a good family friend was recommended to us when OH was having treatment on the mainland every fortnight & could be away for 12 hours plus. She loves both dogs and is happy with £10.00 for the day, don't ask anything else of her and she is quite happy to sit & watch TV or read with them on the sofa. She does take them out for a short walk, I trust her & could ask for no more knowing that they are all happy.

When my friend sits the dogs for me I fill the fridge and freezer (and leave him something nice to drink) and usually take him for a meal or something if its only 1 night, when he looked after them for 10 days last year I gave him £120 when we got back (think a meal would have been a bit cheeky!). He said he didn't want any money because he enjoys a change of scene but I really really appreciate how lucky I am with him because we have a few other pets as well as the dogs and the house is always cleaner when I get back than when I left (shame on me).
The going rate for proper house sitters in this area seems to be about £35 - £40 a day but amongst our group of friends it tends to be about 10 - 15 a day if we do give each other money for pet sitting.
