My friends bitch had pups a couple of months ago and the last couple of weeks has lost a lot of hair,i knoow this can happen in humans so i told her that, but today when i spoke to her she said that round her eyes are more or less bald and her coat is patchy, dry and getting shorter and thinner by the minute, the vet has told her its just hormones without doing any tests so she has a second opinion appoint on wed but until then has anyone got any ideas what this could be?

yes. Hormones. A bitch will have an extreme moult after having pups

Yup!  Hormones!  It takes them out of the show ring for months.

Two of mine literally go bald in patches. One had a completely bald chest, not a hair on it. Her pups were born in May, she's only just back in full coat now 9 months later!

Provided mange has been ruled out then the cause is likely to be hormonal, my mini longs look like smooths after they have finished raising pups and can be 12 months before they look normal again.

Pomeranian's can lose a lot too.  Had some completely bald on chest around the neck area.  Usually does happen 2 months after pups are born....  Luckily my Spanish don't.

Quick update. Bitch went for a 2nd vet visit, was told pretty much the same,no test required as it as too much of a coincidence having not long had pups. Now her other dogs are all scratching and one has hairloss around the eyes( this dog has just been to stud) so she is going back tonight and demanding a skin scrape to be done. She has treated them all with advocate and surolan ear drops.I am meant to be looking after 2 of the dogs in 2 weeks time but im very wary no incase it is contagious. She is worried its mange,if it is mange how quick is it treated? I wouldnt want it passed to my dogs.

I think some manges are more infectious than others and they need dips/baths to clear them up.

I would see which mange the vet says it is and then research it online.

Skin scrape came back normal apparently vet says to wait longer for ringworm results but its definately not mange.vet thinks the itching and hairloss on face could be down to the earmites they had.they have all been treated so he says the itching should stop. The major hair loss on the bitch who had pups he says is down to hormones My friend is very relieved and i can hopefully still look after the dogs.
